What is the status of these stores. I live within 50- miles of three of these stores and the inventory is poor and the store in Salisbury is a mess with noone in the store who cares or knows anything about the merchandise. What gives?

The biggest problem with all of these Farm Supply stores is that they try to sell products below the competition by keeping their overhead low and not paying thier employees enough. Lets face it the biggest single expense in an operation like that is the payroll. So you cut the payroll lower than anyone else and you can sell products cheaper. Therefore they get young kids or old retired people to work there and expect them to know everything about parts and their inventory. I had a friend that worked at the local TSC and a single guy that you would need for a parts counter person could not make a living on the 12,000 or so that they pay, and then they want you to work 6 days a week and on sundays??? I think not. That is why there is no help there and noone knows anything about what is going on. Personally I would pay a little more for the products if I had someone who could tell me something about it and maybe sell me what I need to go with it. If I wanted self service I would go to Lowes. Someone needs to tell them that price is not everything...OK, Im done ranting now..... ....

I agree with you on the low pay. I spent 21 years in a similar farm store. I was the store manager for the last eight of those years. I left there a couple of years ago to pursue a different career. That didn't pan out, and now I'm back at the store, except at the bottom of the totem pole this time. I'm single with no dependents, except my tractor hobby. There's no way a family man can make a living on what they pay.

Hey guys. I received a catalog from Quality Farm Supply in 2000. The 1999 catalog was Central Tractor Parts. The Catalog for 2001 showed up as Valu-Built tractor parts. I assume this is the all same outfit that you guys are talking about. Are they going to shut down all together? The last couple of times I ordered parts they sent the wrong parts. They did finally get me the right parts, but it was a big hassle. Needless to say I have quit ordering from them. I think I've forgotten more about parts than those guys will ever know. Just goes to show you, if you expect to hire decent people, then you need to pay them a decent liveable wage and treat them right. Just my two cents worth.

It is just another example of P poor management there are 2 stores within a few miles of where I live and neither one has any inventory worth a hoot. A few years ago this seemed to be the case with Tractor Supply also but fortunately they got their ducks in a row and now have decently stocked stores with any amount of luck you live resonably close to a TSC store as they are a better alternative to Qualities sinking ship

You talk about ignorant help. I tried for a Job at Tractor Supply a year and a half ago. They offered $6.50/hr. You about can't live down here in NC on only $12-13,000 per year. No wonder the good help works somewhere else. The Quality Store in Thomasville closed too. I'm going to miss it.

They closed the one near me in westminster md last month, From talking to some of the employees they told me the main office wasn't paying the suppliers. They supposedly are reorganizing under bankruptcy protection and some of their profitable stores will remain open, but I don't hold much hope for them, they pissed off too many customers and suppliers. The stores in Fredrick md & Hanover Pa. still don't have much stock and they told me the company had sold off its used parts inventory. The only good thing about them closing is they were selling remaining inventory at pennies on the dollar, my neighbor bought 1200# of nuts and bolts for $300.

Sounds like a good way to monopolize the market. Buy up the competition and then reorganization under Chapter 11.

If so, they didn't buy up the right competition. My local TSC is full of customers, is restocked regularly, has good sales staff, and made the local CT-Farm&Country (now closed) look terrible. Admitedly, CT-F&C had access to used tractor parts that TSC doesn't, but there is/was NO comparison between the service.

BTW, I don't work for TSC either.

The stores here in nebraska are closing, most already closed, inventory fell off the past couple of years something terrible. Another big farm supply chain is at least taking over our two local ones. John in Nebraska.

I was in a Country General at Dodge City, KS. last fall, the "employees" knew nothing and seemed proud of it. What a change from when it opened in 93.

I've heard they have done the Chpt. 11 thing; the one in Vestal, NY has a bunch of empty shelves and seems like there is no attempt to restock.

I too was disgusted at how Quality/CT has gone down hill. I discovered a new Tractor Supply store in Mt Airy and another in Leesburg VA.

They are what Central Tractor used to be and even better. Everything I needed was on the shelf with better quality and better prices. Also found intelligent employees.

After the merge it went down hill fast!! I remeber when the store open near me. It was the talk of the town. It was packed all of the time. Plus the younger people that work their sure don't help sales. I am a youg man my self but know the differnce between a starter and a generator.

Robert I agree with you totaly we have a hobby farm in Pittsville and every time I go in there to buy something they only have half of what I went in to get so I dont shop there any more we get most of our vet supplies from catalog and equipment parts from area dealers less hassle.

All of the stores west of the Mississippi have closed. And here in IA, they were doing a dern fine business. I probably bought in excess of $1000 a year, and it was obvious they were making money. One small town about 15 miles from me closed its store, and it was all that town had going for it. I imagine its the same old story, some bigwig at the top decided to get richer. Anyways, I hope they reopen them soon, I sure do miss it. P.S. I'm talking about Country General stores, but everybody calls them S&S, what they used to be. Is this the same one as back east?

Hi, Robert, where are you at in Md.? I'm down in Somerset Co. The last I heard, Quality had filed Chapter 11 and was trying to reorganize and buy some time. I used to work at the Sby store and I almost have to agree totally with you, but as long as Brian is still there, there is at least one employee who cares. As for the rest, they're not worth the powder and shot.... and the place IS empty. Georgetown is a whole lot better.
My $.02. Karl
