I have a 79 kawasaki invader 440 l/c, and it is very, very hard starting, i have to put a little gas in the cylinder and then pull it over for a minimum of 20 minutes for it to start, but once it is started, it runs strong. what causes this, and how can it be remedyed.

also, i have a 71 moto-ski capri 340, that it will start great once, then once it is shut off, wont start, period. it takes a hours before it will even pop. It has bright blue spark, and it is getting fuel. what causes this, and how can i fix it

thank you in advance

I have had this experience with an intruder and a John deere JDX 4, and it sounds to me like their is a pinhole in your fuel line somewhere and you are losing your prime. If you don't already have a primer mounted in your dash they are more than worth their weight.(they sell for about $20 can)
If your tub under your carbs is wet this is a good sign to a small fuel leak. The fuel may not leak when the machine is running but will let air in when parked.
Another possibility is a weak fuel pump, not recovering the fuel to the carbs when you are pulling on the rope but with the engine running and the vaccuum up it works fine. Makuni pump kits are available and are relatively simple to change.

I would look for worn side seals on the Kaw.

-On the 440 I would say it is a weak CDI box or possibly sucking air in the carb somewhere, or it could be low on compression. One thing you can do is remove the flywheel and sand the magnets on it to make sure there is no rust on them, If it has rust on them it shortens the air gap between.

-On the 340, does it have points and condensor. If so, the condensor is bad or getting bad. I have soldered in many off the shelf condensors in place of a factory one. You can get a condensor at a auto parts store real cheap. Just solder it in or twist the wires together and attach it anywhere out side the engine. I have used electrical tape to tape it to somewhere on the engine. Email me back if you are still having problems. Hope this helps.
