I have started quite a discussion on the Red Power forum about the John Deere 4020 giveaway in the FFA. My question to you is.... Which was/is a better tractor, the John Deere 4020 or the IH 806/856/or 1066?? Also, which one would you rather win if you could?? Thanks in advance for the replies.

The 4020 was the greatest, most versatile tractor
ever made. One would be out of their mind not to go for the 4020.

If you want to be fashionable, take the 4020

If you want to do farm work in a field, take the 806 or 856

Me? I'll take the 1066, it outclasses them all

DT engine less costly to OH than JD 6L.but on the other hand the JD has excellent hydraulics.the trans in the IH is big and heavy both have have goodPTO controls.well if its a giveaway its probably a coin toss.personally i'd take a 185 allis though.

In South Georgia and North Florida the Cairo JD dealer was so good nobody would ever buy anything else. The current myth is that JD had to change models or else no one would ever buy a new tractor because the 4020 never wears out. I personnally know of one rancher who never used his 4020 to do anything but plant winter feed who finally after 30 years had the brakes replaced even though they didn's really need it. I have a 2020 and it is running better than my new 231S Massey.

Before I start, let me say that I have red paint on more than one set of shoes. I wasn't even 10 when I knew how to run an IH 'C' and an 806 Wheatland. We also had an 'H'. I have also spent some time on 1066s and 1086s. I think both 806 and 4020 machines are great. The engine in the 806 is phenomenal !!!

Putting the 1066 in the same class as a 4020 is not a fair comparison. Compare a 1066 to a 4430. Far more of the IH flock went green on that choice than on the 4020/806 choice. Also, the local dealer is a big factor in the choice too. If you trust your IH dealer but not the JD dealer, I think I'd choose the IH even if the JD was better, as my dad did.

IH tractors were a great value and still are. No reasonable person will deny that. I focus my toy collecting on IH tractors.

But, after 1960, JD tractors just leap frogged the IH machines in ergonomics and finese. JDs from that era are just more pleasant to drive.

In today's world, the choice might come down to what you're going to be doing with the machine, the cost of the machine, and perhaps, sentimental or religious favorites. I would take either one and be tickled. They're both still great machines in terms of reliability and usability. If all I was going to do is plow or chisel plow all day long, I'd take the 806/856.

But, if you were to make me choose, and I had to stick to my choice, I'd take the 4020.

I have a 4020. Is it "better"? Who cares? It is 33 years old and I happen to own it, and don't want to rush out and get a 806 or 856 to try it against.

Why can't someone ask: "Which is better---an AC 190xt or an MF 1100"?

It would have the added feature of dragging the Orange Power Boosters out of the woodwork as well as the Massey crowd (neither group seems to say much)

I am TIRED of the endless RED vs GREEN debate.

Other, much more INTERESTING comparisons:

MM G1000 vs IHC f1206
MF 1155 vs IHC 1468
OL 1600 vs AC 180
CASE 830 vs MM M670
AC 190xt vs MM G900
AC D21 II vs JD 5020
AC D21 II vs IHC f1206
Case 1070 vs Ford 8000
JD 2510 vs IH f504

Nothing too terribly wrong with a good old fashioned "colorwar", but Persian Orange, Desert Sand, Dark Green, Prairie Gold, Blue, Red & Grey, and Silver paint colors always seem to get left out!!!!!

Thank You.

Perhaps, but the John Deere I suggested to compare with the D21 II was the 141.5 hp 5020, NOT the 95 hp 4020! I also suggested D21 II vs IHC f1206.

Perhaps it is the 190xt you wish to compare to a 4020????

Or perhaps you wish to compare the 426cid turbo in the D21 series II to the 6404T in a 4520?

At any rate, the D21 in any form, when compared to a 4020 is like comparing apples with tomatos. NOT RELAVANT! DOES NOT COMPUTE!

Want something to brag about? How about this: AC D17 vs MM g1000! The tractors I originally suggested were at least similar.

LOL

I will take the 4020 ive had one for 25 years,IH tractors will never have a resale value like a John Deere and IH will never have a transmission that will shift like a Syncro Range or Power Shift

Not even going to bother reading the replies, this sort of question just begs for a big pointless pi$$ing match.

Who really cares, if I win a tractor I'll take it, paint it any darn color you want to. If you don't like the color of the tractor, then don't buy a ticket.

There, I feel better.

First of all that old 6 cylinder was not junk second if you can find one in an 806 you ani't got an IH 806 they had a 361 not a 283. But the 8 will walk all over a 4020

I just did a job with one of them and that is the most worthless piece of junk I have ever driven. It wouldn't stay in high gear, the high/low wouldn't stay (had to wire it forward), the brakes didn't work, and the steering was so loose that even if it would stay in high gear, I wouldn't be able to control it. To top it all off, I only had about 4500 hours on it!!

You asked a tough question to answer. The 806/856 were good tractor's exept I think some of the early 806s had that piece of junk gas engine that was converted to a diesel. Otherwise they were all good tractors. If I had to choose, I'd go for the 4020 especially if it had the power-shift. They tell me that that was a very tough tractor. From a collecter's perspective, they don't seem to be as easy to find as an 806, 856 or 1066. If you were to win it, you'd also be getting a tractor that is worth more. Good question.

You better stick with the 806/856 - 4020 comparision. The 1066 is an entirely different class of tractor.

I worked for a farmer who had a 4020 when I was a lot younger and I liked driving that tractor, but the 806 would keep on working when that 4020 was out of horses.

I vote for the 806

If I had to drive it, I'd take the 4020. If I could hire an operator, I'd take the Farmall. By the way, the 4020 had better be a SynchroRange.

Hey I didn't hear you mention anything about a 1066 vs. 4020 over at RED POWER. I think a 1066 is a way better tractor than the 4020!- I think you should stick to 4020 vs. 806/856- Its a way better match up! I live for RED but a restored 4020 would look nice in my shed- That's if I only won it!(I wouldn't buy one) I would definitly take the IH's though! Heck, if its given to me for free, I don't care what brand it is!
