She went less than 1/2 a mile this morning. Engine rpms went high, like I was spinning a tire on ice. Stopped the car. Drove away in first gear, but that is all I have. No reverse, but acts like it would like to move. It is noisy like something may have broken, but not to bad. It does have a button on the lower instrument panel for starting out in second gear. It is a overdrive type tranny. First time for a tranny problem. 3.1 engine. 257K miles

Just hoping someone can offer a possible, simple fix.

Thank you SDE

We blew out the reverse drum on our 94 cutlass this spring, it makes that kind of noise, pretty common in those trans, GM reman supposedly have an improved drum, i got a different trans from a wrecked car in the salvage yard that only had 60,000 on it for 400 bucks. I think a rebuilt GM trans and installation was going to cost around eighteen hundred is what the local mechanic quoted me, which is not too bad if you plan on keeping the car a while. Ours has 215,000 on and still gets 27mpg with wife driving it to work daily.

Check fluid. Smell fluid. Look at color. Fixed a few GMs with fluid change. Might take couple days driving. Baby it. After that its big money.

Damn. I have a 91 with the same engine, around 200,000. I parked it because smoke came out of the steering column and the right turn signal light came on and stayed on. Swapped steering columns and the second steering column had the tilt broke so the car is all but undriveable. I'd swap it again but it's a little cold outside right now and I don't have a heated shop.

I miss that car. Gets better mpg on the interstate than anywhere else. Just doesn't seem happy until it hits 70mph.

Replace the turn signal switch in orig column and re-install.Pretty dang easy (and common)on "w" body columns especially if the column is out of vehicle.

When you have it in gear, does it have a "hashy" sound? Like shakin' a coffee can with some marbles in it?

I don't know how to describe the noise, other than it sounds like something is loose and rattling around, down low.
