Can a Farmall A handle a brush hog or does it lack the power?

You need near 20 PTO HP to pull a 5 ft brush hog through heavy grass/brush, An A is under that (15 PTO HP) . A 4 ft would be OK . I have a similar sized tractor and I have a 4 1/2 ft model and at times I use a 1.5 MPH gear. An A does not have that luxury of that low a gear. Independant PTO is not a issue, just use an overriding clutch on the PTO shaft, even with IND PTO you still need that overide clutch as it will try to push you when you try to stop or change gears.

An A sould do just fine with a 5 or 6 footer. The guy up the road from me uses a B to pull a 6 foot and doesn't seem to have much porblems other then in real heavy stuff then he just take a half the deck are when he cuts

Jim; I have a 46 A with a 5ft woods underbelly mower, and it does fine in the yard. Can mow in 3 gear if I wanted to. Not enought power for a brush hog....and no live pto. The A's were grt little tractors (we have 3)but small for that. Of course,if you are fast enought to get it out of gear when the cutting gets tough..... !! Good Luck Bobmn
