Roads would be safe if....

...everyone would get on the same page. Coming home today a sheriff pulled out of a side street right in front of me. I had to brake not to hit him. Then, just when I think all is well he hits the shoulder and does a U-turn right across in front of me...so I hits the brakes again. All he wanted to do was cross the road and set up a west bound speed trap. You think he could of handled this differently. Made me think..."I wonder can I give HIM a ticket?"

Were you able to get his car number ? or at least call the main office they will know who was there at that certain time.
I'd call and report him ! I did it one time but I doubt anything came of it.

I called the sheriff's office to report a deputy I followed through 2 left and 1 right turns and no signal for any turn. Gave them the benefit of the doubt that maybe they were weren't working, but better check car no. 11.

You should be able to. What happens when it goes to court is a different matter. Reminds me of the classic Andy Griffith Show episode "Citizen's Arrest" when Gomer busts Barney for an illegal U turn. Gomer at his sharpest and most rebellious demonstration.

One of my chief peeves as a crusty old cop was baby cops that couldn't be bothered to even try and obey the same laws they enforced. If the guy was so oblivious to traffic around him that he did what was reported, make the call and just let them know that such behavior is not in keeping with the expectations the public has. People makes mistakes, and the more time you spend behind the wheel, the more mistakes you make. So, I can cut anyone some slack since I've made more than my share of boneheaded mistakes and blunders. But, sometimes a little wake up call helps people get their heads out of their backside.

Do not make a report!!!!
Deputy always sets up radar where my town road intersects the state road. I noticed that when ever he left there was a coffee cup and a snack wrapper in the ditch. After I saw this a few times I went down and talked to the patrol supervisor. He said he would take care of it. He Did!
I have lived in my home 18 years I have never been pulled over for anything. Since the Patrol Supervisor took care of it 4 months ago I have been pulled over three times!

I had a similar deal happen to me a couple of years ago. If the axxwhole had used his flashing lights - no biggy - he did not. When I got home I reported him to the local Sargent (RCMP) and he got pooped on - made the local paper somehow. I got stopped (for no known reason) by the same guy a couple of weeks later, he figured it out (easy I guess), nothing happened at that time, but I ratted the arrogant SOB out again (not a great idea I know), BUT, he was transferred out the following week. Made a few locals happy.

When I was on the select board of my little town our then police chief got run into doing the same thing. He was properly embarrassed about it.

I should probably tell you guys...I'm not going to report him. I recognize him from picking up my wife for lunch at her work. In all likelihood they probably know each other. Not sure why he did that twice but I will cut him a little slack. Anyway, when I crested the hill we were on I flashed my lights at all the oncoming traffic for the next mile. Saw one guy jump on his brakes pretty good. Maybe I cut into his quota a little.

There is a local city cop that works the next town north, lives in my town. I guess we're on the same start time because I see him nearly every morning in his patrol car.

Totally ignores every stop sign, never uses a signal, tailgates... Once he hits the freeway he's gone like a rocket! Setting a real good example for all to see.

He may be above the law of the land, but he can't defy the laws of physics! It will catch him some day!

I went to a meeting of the County Supervisors to ask my Supe why she didnt use turn signals when talking on her hand held cell phone. The old Supes hated public meetings.

Had almost the same thing happen to me two years ago. Same state different county. I called from a non-registered to me ph# and reported him. Before that several years I saw a transport van doing 85+ in a 55. Reported that one too.

Had one young cop get into several accidents just because he was in a hurry to get to minor problems . The old cop solution made him drive one with front end damage he wasn't so much a showoff as before . His dad was a former chief of police and said his son would be a great cop as soon as he got in a bar fight and help was slow arriving

You missed a golden opportunity to pull a U-turn and pull in right behind him, got out and knock on his window, ask for his driver's license, vehicle registration, proof of insurance, AND his ticket book. Then you should have went back to your vehicle, dialed 9-1-1, gotten a dispatcher on the phone, tell them who you are, what you're doing, and ask them to run wants or warrants on his driver's license and vehicle plate, and while they're doing that you should have conferenced in his insurance company and ask them whether or not his policy is real of fake. Depending on the outcome of all of that would be how many tickets you could have written him with his own book before sending him on to have a nice day. I do it all the time and am encouraging everyone else to do it as well. You would be surprised how nice officers are and can be when they make a simple mistake and are corrected. Try it some time.

If I see a Police car on the side of the road (either side) I flash my lights for at least 1 Km. to the oncoming traffic.

About 25 years ago, I was driving a U.S. Government vehicle and flashed my lights at oncoming traffic for just that reason. A couple minutes later I was pulled over by a second patrolman and read the riot act for just that thing. He informed me that it was against the law here in Montana to warn oncoming traffic of working law enforcement.

Just "what if" one of those cars you warned was being driven by someone who should have been caught for the safety of all? Our roads would be safer if everyone drove within the grace period of the speed limit that officers allow. I personally want law breakers caught because there is a chance somewhere down the road they could cause an accident that had a member of my family in it.

When I was living in N.H. back in the eighties near Nashua, I was passed by a state cop running 80+ in the 55 mph zone of the interstate. It would happen a lot so I called the state cop office one day to report all that speeding, waste of time. The response was that there was a lot of road to cover and not a lot of cops. Heck, I was always in a hurry to get somewhere too, but I would get tickets. I bought a good radar detector so I could ignore the supposed law also.

Maybe you should cut him a little slack.
You never know, he may be behind you next time you try to do a little No-Till planting going down the highway.

A few years back, they had a county cop get into a accident in Dansville. Which of course, is not in the county. I never heard how he explained that one.

Don't know exactly what to do in your case. D if you do and D if you don't. Where I live there is an interstate running through town where the speed limit is 65 on a stretch that could support 20 mph more. We have motorcycle cops who sit in the middle and work radar, often shooting out into traffic to catch speeders. I have witnessed several near misses here. One time I almost bought a new Harley and a funeral. The guy shot out into my lane and I did everything necessary to miss him while riding my horn. Oh, I have air horns on my pickup, not those little ones with an air compressor, but real Mack dumptruck horns with an air tank. The officer gave up on his chase and almost laid his ride down in front of me before pulling off to the side as I drove by. Dirty looks were plentiful...

I doubt I would call in on your deal unless he does it often.

I did call the dispatch office one afternoon on the officers who were escorting a funeral procession that I was in. They were "clearing" intersections where there were red lights and not waiting long enough for the procession to get by before leaving. Caused a lot of near misses that day, and on top of that, they were "hot dogging" going around each other at high rates of speed. This was a long procession, and was going all the way across town. I called the dispatch and told them their officers were a little out of control and would appreciate someone passing that on before someone else is going to the cemetery that day. I have radios in my truck (I'm a firefighter) and in about two minutes I heard a supervisor come on the channel they were using and told them to "close it up". Not sure what that meant but things got better almost instantly.

I have to work with and around some of these guys and many are correct that the law applies differently sometimes. Drive right and don't be afraid to point things out.

Years ago, just after the government imposed the 55 MPH nationwide speed limit, I was passed by two deputies from another county. They were going so fast I decided to follow but lost them at 90. Called the state police to complain. The state police called me at 3:00 AM to investigate!!!! I got the message, don't report fellow law enforcement officers, they are untouchable.

As I understand it, here in NY state at least, police vehicles are not covered under the vehicle and traffic laws.
Makes perfect sense since they may have to speed or go down a one way street the wrong way while in pursuit of a suspect.
However, in the case cited above, there appeared to be no reason to not obey the law.
Having said that, unless you are a powerful politician, it would be losing proposition to report the incident. Chances of getting anywhere are slim to none!

When I lived in Beaufort County, SC in the late 80s the Sheriff would cite any deputies breaking traffic laws while not responding
to calls. He said they are NOT above the law and cannot expect anyone to have respect for laws they do not themselves obey. He
felt, with few exceptions, if you cannot do it without a badge, you should not be doing it with one.

A couple months ago one of our deputies did a u turn on the highway without checking for traffic or turning his lights on. He got t-boned and totaled a few week old squad car. Luckily no one was injured. It was his parting gift to the Sheriff as he only had two weeks to go before starting work in the next county.

Had to drive into northern Virginia over the past few months. The last time I actually saw a school bus run a red light; third vehicle to run it! A SCHOOL BUS! Its a wonder that I-66 doesn't look like the road out of Kuwait.

We have a 4 lane state highway in our county. 90+ county mounties on the sheriffs force, a large proportion of which are road deputies. You would be hard pressed to see even one of which drive in the right lane, doing anywhere near the speed limit, with no siren or lights on. It is so common that wife and I call the left lane the "Cop lane". During recent election season, with sheriff on ballot, one candidate visited me and I had the rare opportunity to vent this and several other frustrations I have with county Sheriffs actions(including a deputy pulling his gun on my very friendly dog when he was at my farm asking for information, not an official call!)

I was a career NYS Trooper. You are wrong. Police and emergency vehicles are subject to the same laws you and I are EXCEPT when operating in an emergency. I can also assure you, that for the NYSP anyway, complaints always get investigated. I knew one guy that sat the desk for 5 years over his driving.

The one qualifier I will mention is that the average road cop is trying to balance his concern over getting a complaint about his speed and his concern over getting a complaint over his not getting to where he has to be fast enough. When someone calls for service, a car accident or burglary or whatever and it's not a red lights and siren type thing, they still get really PO'd if it takes you 45 minutes to get there. I've had people people complain it took me took long to get to them. I've had people complain about pretty much everything I've ever done. You don't want to run lights and siren everywhere because that can cause accidents. So you try and find a happy medium that doesn't exist.

I get what you are saying, but consider that I was once at the SP Academy in Albany and was told at 9:30AM that I HAD to be in County Court in Canton NY by noon as I had been subpoenaed by a judge that was not exactly an understanding cop lover. That's 200 miles in a little over 2 hours. How do you make anyone happy in that situation?

I don't want to knock my cop buddy's BUT my shop is 1 1/2 mile from the station. They come and pick me up so I can drive there car/truck back to the shop. I think they are taught to jerk snatch accelerate and stop aggressive after all they are king of the road.

One night a couple of years ago, I was following two cars poking along about 5mph below the 60mph speed limit. There was no oncoming traffic, so I kicked it in the butt and went flying around both of them. A Deputy Sergeant, whom I knew, happened to be in the right place to pull me over and give me a written warning for speeding. I could tell he was having a hard time keeping a straight face through it all.

Then when I got home, my wife was standing there laughing at me. She'd heard the whole thing on her scanner.

A couple of weeks later, I happened to sit at the same table as the County Sheriff at a graduation party and couldn't resist telling him about it. I wasn't complaining, it was my own dang fault, I just thought he'd get a kick out of it and he did.

He then told me a tale from a year or so before that. He lives in a different town from where his office is. One evening he was driving his personal car in plain clothes when a city cop from the town he lives in stopped him for going several miles per hour over the limit. When the cop found out who he had, he just had to go all the way with a background check, run the VIN on the vehicle, and anything else he could think of. While all of this was going on, the Sheriff's Deputies were listening to it all on the radio. He said it was two weeks before he could get all of his deputies to shut up and quit giving him a hard time over it.

that just went to higher appeals court this year... Its called freedom of speech and the cops CAN NOT STOP YOU..

BUT they can pick on you for anything else.

A few years back when I was still driving out of KCK they opened a new stretch of interstate, I-670, between KCK and KCMO. The first few days it was open I saw a KS HP trooper parked around the bend just past the "Welcome to Kansas" sign at the border. I called the "KS. Bureau of Tourism" and asked them if it was one of their promotions. The gal I spoke with said that she would find out. I never saw another speed trap there. gm

I learned long ago that anytime someone pulls out if front of me and I have to hit the brakes they are going to turn again in less than half a mile so I just back off and wait for it. Once in a blue moon they will actually pick up and keep going so I'm surprised when that happens.

(quoted from post at 17:36:35 11/20/15) Does any body here have a dash cam they like? Kind of confused about what to buy. Thanks for the help.

Lots of junk out there and its all chinese. I bought this one a year ago and its on whenever I drive. No rear view but i mainly got it for when hauling.

For backup cam, i put two of this in my Dad's vehicles. I took the cameras off the licens braxket and epoxied them to magenfs so they can be moved, depending on whether or not his power chair in on the rack.
