My wife and I today turned in our leased Jeep, a 2004 Jeep Liberty. We were allowed 45K miles and it only has 44,350 miles. However the dealership says that we have to pay an extra $300 security deposit....on top of the last monthly payment. Am I getting scammed here? We turned in the jeep with no defects, just a few minor door dings, no interior damage. It feels like a last stick in the ribs by Chrysler. Of course the dealer said they would waive the $300 if we leased or bought another Chrysler car or truck. (yeah right) my final 2 cents....F-you. The dealer rep says the Jeep is in great shape and looks very good, so the $300 is not for cleaning or damage.

I agree with others. Don't pay him the $300 unless he can show you where it says that in the contract you signed.

Just tell him you don't remember this fee and ask him to show you. No need to be rude. If he can't verify to your satiisfaction, simply decline to pay. If he can verify you agreed, say OOps, and cut him a check.

It sounds like you are getting shafted somehow.

At the same time, what you have said doesn't add up either. Certainly you are ticked & might have a right to be, but please take care to place the blame where it belongs. It could be your individual dealer, or a leasing co, or you for not reading all the fine print, or possibly Chrysler itself.

I think Chryslet is the last in line tho, so be careful on who you are trying to blame....

When I bought my Dakota pickup a dozen years ago I ordered it as built. When it came the dealer said he forgot a $100 fee or bill, if I would be nice enough to pay that extra.

Obviously, I stll remember that as fresh in my mind. What a jerk of a dealer. No, I just grinned at him, & wrote out the full payment as we had agreed upon. If he had said one more word, I woulda been happy to offer to open up the purchase contract we agreed to - corn hadgone down 20 cents that year between ordering & delivery, so I woulda been happy to 'account' for errors in that time period if he wanted to.

I don't blame Chrysler for this. Just a dumb dealer. And I had read the fine print, so I knew where I stood at the time.

I would not pay any money 'extra' unless it was spelled out which clause of the lease & what to for it was all about. Security deposits are, by their very name, paid before and refunded if the dealer feels like it. That's not what this is.

Vehicle leases are generally a racket, so many people go for them - just like credit card debt. People ain't thinking when they get into this kinda stuff. Kinda starts out your fault for doing a lease to begin with..... There were better ways to get a vehicle. jmho

I have never leased a vehicle. Rarely good for an individual, sometimes good for a business. The dealership typically handles the details of a lease, but the vehicle is actually sold to the leasing organization. That organization owns it and will eventually resell it.

Maybe instead of crying scam, you should read your original contract first? See what you agreed to do upfront? Is your lease with Chrysler Financial or another bank? I am a Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, and Chevrolet Dealer, so I have a little experience in these matters.

A security deposit is paid up front an returned when the item is returned without any damage. I would tell them where to shove it and walk out. They can take you to court but I don't think they have a leg to stand on.

Don't make sense to be paying a security deposit in something you are turning in. All security deposits I have seen were always paid up front.

Call chrysler and talk to them.

These dealers are all pushing leases for a reason---they make more money with them !

Per the wife if another mopar product comes in the drive way she is out the other drive. You always get it in the end with a lease vehicle. Basic you paid for it and give it back in so many words.

It isn't JUST Chrysler!! They are ALL the same. They know you're a sucker just by the fact that you are talking "lease" in the first place. I also think that dealers who "fudge" the financing figures and "lead on" buyers who they know can't possibly make the payments should be the ones liable to the loan institution when they can't pay for the car. I will go on record as saying I have never known an auto salesman who hasn't lied to make a deal , either outright or through omition. I managed a body shop at a Chrysler dealership for 6 yrs , a Chevy dealership for 2 and several used car dealers. These people are so corrupt and full of intentionally misleading bussiness practices and have done it for so long that they themselves are convinced that it is normal and nothing wrong with it because "they all do it". The OWNER of the Chrysler one told all of us (especially service dept) at our monthly meeting that from know on any part put on a car , STAYS on the car reguardless of whether it fixed the problem or not. That was his corrupt way of lowering his parts inventory and making more profit at the same time. Screw the customer , they will never know. As far as the car dealer posting on here , if the shoe fits , wear it. If not don't be defensive , help your corrupt subculture police their selves and clean up their act. Most are not too far above pimps on the scale of life forms.

Make the dealer show you where it is in the contract. It sounds like they are trying to pull a fast one. Good luck.

I think that's standard policy, check your contract. Sounds like a bunch of crap, but I think it's normal.

Is this $300 that they have and are not returning or are they asking/billing you for 300 more? If it is the latter what's the problem? Walk. Thanks for the heads up though. My limited experience with Chrysler products hasn't been good.

You don't need to find yours- have them show you theirs. They're the ones who want the money. Your not asking for any more than they would have to furnish if they took you to court over it. Which they won't, by the way, but the problem is they may put it on your credit report, which is not good.
