Hello, I just purchased my first JD tractor and i want to change my brake pads.
I purchased brake linings with rivets and i have no idea what to use to press the rivets on.
Is there a tool? And if someone has one, please let me know where i can get one or if someone has a picture, i would greatly appreciate it.
Thanks,
Henry

I made this one to do the brakes on my WD-45. The anvil and rivit set (gray parts)are from an old automotive type rivit tool that I picked up at a auction. The automotive one was'nt deep enough, so I made this one. The piece on the bottom, is so I can clamp it into a vice.

Green store has a tool that will do it. I think it is too high but I have one anyway. The flareing punch is $26.00. Go to www.greenstore.com. Go to store then look in tool sales.

I have truck brake linings glued on for 7 dollars a shoe at a truck sevice center. And you guys pay 50 bucks per shoe and mess around with rivets. I don't get it.

Heavy Duty brake shoes are still riveted on. Must be a reason ? I don't know If I'd trust that glue 100%

Learning restoration processes can not be learned by hiring someone else to do the work. After the brake lining has been bonded to the bands or shoes they very well may be a far better brake. However they have been repaired not restored as they were from the factory. If you do not have a desire to understand how each and every part was made or assembled you would also never understand those of us that do.

It is called different strokes for different folks.

I bought my rivet flaring punch at a hobby shop. They had all sizes in single packages. I just bought the one I needed to do my brake linings for the small Allis Chalmers brakes.

They would look like those in the kit at the link.

Some of this friction and brake material can be done by hand, best if you can find someone that has equipment to do it. Also nice when the material is pre-drilled and counter bored, all you have to do is clinch the fasteners. I think many also bond and mechanically fasten as well.

Here is one supplier of rivets and tooling, I think there are others, do a search, there are hand clinch tools available, but I think you will find it easier done by someone who does this work and has the equipment that makes short work of it.

There was a great brake place near here that would do that for seven dollars. They stocked relined Harley shoes[remember when all the towns had Police bikes, even Sportster police models]One day I go there and a county politician has bought it out and its all new auto parts.I asked for Harley shoes and he says I got rid of all the old junk it probably had asbestos dust on it.One more place that provided good service gone.Come to think of it Id recommend any Harley dealer. They had the foot press riveters, but Im living in the past on that too Im sure.

You can use a punch that fits the head of rivet and a ROLL PIN PUNCH To flare the other end Place the big punch in a vice and go for it , oh yea use a BMFH. Just don't mash your fingers.

Don't know where you could buy the tool to press the rivets, but you might try a Brake shop in your area to see if they could flare the rivet. I use Heitmanns brake lining in Tx to flare the rivets on the pulley brake and brake linings.
