I'm changing the rear brakes on a 1979 Chevy 4X4. The old brakes were worn paper thin and starting to come off the backing-they were bonded type. I replaced everything and now the drum won't go back on even with the adjuster screwed all the way in. I have a K-D measure tool for the shoes and drum and measures the shoes 1/4 inch larger than the drum. Could it be parking brake? I know he said his gas mileage has been very poor. Thanks for any information. Bob

Problem solved and I feel so dumb. I had the adjuster in wrong and also took some sandpaper to a small rust ridge on the drums and they went on. Sorry to bother you all but thank you very much for your time and help. I appreciate it. Bob

Yes, if it has been quite a while since the brakes were done, it could be the parking brake cables won't retract because of rust. I had the same exact problem you are having with my Dakota. I replaced the parking brake cables going to the brakes and the problem was solved.

The shoes should fit against the post at the top and against the self adjuster at the bottom. This is the smallest that they can be. if the drum won't go back on you have the wrong shoes. I've had this happen. Compare them VERY closely to the old shoes if you still have them. If you have already returned them for the core I would go back to the parts house and ask to see them again. Is this happening on both sides? Are the new shoes seated firmly, both at the wheel cylinders and at the adjuster? Do the pistons in the wheel cylinders move all the way in? If one of them is stuck, it will hold the shoes out too far. It could also be the parking brake as you suggest. Is there a built-up ridge of rust on the drum? And lastly, are you sure they are the correct shoes? I hope this will help you. I can't think of any other ideas without being there and seeing the brakes myself.
