Broke Bolt Removal

I got some engine side mount weights for my Allis Chalmers B. One of the tapped mounting holes in the engine block has a bolt broke off in it. It is broke off into the hole some, no chance to weld to it. I got one of these "easy out" things and it snapped off so quick I couldn't believe it. Now I have the jagged broke end of the easy out keeping me from boring out the bolt. That would have been relatively easy had I been smart enough to stay away from that "easy out". Anybody got any slick tricks for this sort of thing?

How good of a welder are ya ????? there is a rod called MG 600 that is the neatest stuff one can use . But ya need a DC machine to run it i have welded on bolts down to 3/8ths , the way i do it is place a nut over the hold and weld down thru the nut and keep building up into the nut as you get to the top of the nut start unscrewen the nut while your welding and keep on till ya have about a 1/2 inch sticken out you will end up with perfect threads on the weld let cool till ya can touch it with bare hands then ya can either put a couple nuts on it and lock them down and back out the broken bolt or stud if the weld breaks off do it again as the broken pice will shrink. A welding engineer taught me that one but that MG 600 is the only rod i have used for this as the slag will go into the threads of the nut and make neat threads on the weldment.

It can be washed out with a torch, then chase the threads, The steel will burn out before the cast will melt

To begin with alway use left handed drills.The broken EZ out is brittle and i have been able to break them up into small pieces with punches and remove with air and or needle nose or picks.I do not use the spiral type even if made of high speed steel.I like to drill out to where their is only a shell left,then use CAPE CHISEL and colapse the shell and remove. with out seeing it my thoughts run to. 1 use a punch or chizel to break off and then remove the parts of the ez put as much as possible then get a piece of pipe that will go into the bolt hole. 2 Then put a welding rod into the pipe and position it very close to the bolt. 3 Then have a helper turn the welder on and off when you want him to. He can shut it off if it sticks.

Yep those cheap hardware store E-Z outs aren't worht the $$ you spend on them. Thats why years ago I spent $75 on a set of the good E-Z outs and have never had any problems with them. If that E-Z out broke off so it is sticking out some you should be able to weld a nut on it and turn it as if you are tightening it and the E-Z out should come out so at least you can start from square one again

Can you weld it now? Even if you don't get it to stick, the heat of the welding will help loosen the bold and may also soften the easy-out enough to make it drillable.

I believe the best advice will be to buy a carbide drill and never, ever used the easy out that has the spiral design.
