Broken tap removed finally.

I finally got the broken tap removed from the hole. I used a 1/8 inch pin punch and kept tapping away at it until I had one flute broken loose all the way through. Then the rest were easy. I then drill and retapped to a larger size.

Thanks for all the good ideas though.

I believe it's best to keep the original thread size by using a Helicoil or similar insert. That way you don't have to enlarge the hole in the part to be mounted.

If you by any chance you break another tap and you can"t remove it by your past methods, find a machine shop that has an EDM Machine and they can remove the tap for you. May be a little expensive but may save your part for you.

Dull taps break often.Cheap taps should not be used.Use a tap wrench and reverse the tap often to clear the chips.I have seen taps with a groove ground into the shank. This is supposed to make the tap break at the groove.
