I tried looking in the archives as I remember seeing stuff on this over the years but can't find the right thread. I changed the knives on my bushhog and tightened them on with a big air wrench. Too tight as it turns out 'cause when you hit a rock it throws the whole machine out of balance since the centrifugal force can not re-center the blades after a solid hit, since they are too tight. Now I have loosened them slightly but am concerned the nut will work loose and fall off. There are lock washers but no holes in the ends of the bolts to put cotter pins through. Short of carrying a wrench and checking on them hourly, has anyone solved this one? Am I missing something? Should I drill holes and put in cotter pins?

I notice mine have a bit of weld on them to hold the nuts in place! I don't look forward to replacement!

Wow can I ever jump into this one!! My 42 inch Troy pony mower had a set of OEM blades on it. I also bought two sets from that place down in the carolinas. They sell the Oregon replacement blades. Much more meat on them. The end of the OEM blade just pealed off today. The "wing" that makes your blade into a high lift came off on one end. Not a real big deal but it sure started to vibrate! Oregon blades forever! There is a big Diff between a 2 lb blade and a 20 lb blade. Don't mess around! Jeffcat

I would agree with comments above... you have the wrong bolts/blades combination. The shoulder must match the blade. Those bolts must be tight!I put a 4 foot bar on them plus locktite. With locktite I have no problem with them coming undone and the 4 foot bar is adequate to loosen them for blade replacement.I have no binding problems. Cal

All the ones I have ever worked with had a bushing that was in the end of the blade then the bolt, or had a shoulder type bolt. Sounds like you may have a part missing or the wrong bolt

If you calculate the speed of the end of those blades using RPM X circumference, you will find they travel at a lot of MPH and you do not want them coming off.

The blades should swing freely regardless of how tight that bolt is. Sounds like you either got the wrong blade or bolt or somethings worn. Never seen rotary cutter blade bolts with a cotter key in it. If you did put one in it would just get torn out over time, the underside of that thing takes some abuse. If it were mine I would take it back apart and try to match things up.

The bolts should be a shoulder type. Meaning that there is a step down in diameter where the threads are. The blade should pivot on the larger diameter smooth shoulder area. Are the new blades are thicker than the old ones? If so you could probably buy bolts to match the blades. I definately would not loosen the bolts and operate it that way. There is a tremendous amount of force on the blades when they are spinning. A bolt that is even slightly loose will start to wear and wobble. Next thing you know the blade becomes a deadly missle.
