C - clamps; anyone bought some lately?

Had to change the brakes on my truck and needed C clamp to squeeze back the calipers.

My boys lost my ancient 8" iron clamp somewhere - never to be seen again I am sure.

Went to the local BIG BOX store to buy replacement. Man was I disappointed.

Could only find 4" and 6" clamps and they are CHEAPLY made. The screw drags and grabs and the spine does not appear to rigid.

Even seen C clamps with Quick Disconnects that you could slide the entire screw up or down. Gotta wonder about the strength of that design under harsh load.

Looks like time to hit the yard sales to find me sold OLD, SOLID IRON C clamps.

Done ranting!

Rack Clamp...heavy duty, drop forged steel, two piece, made in England. I have two of them and they have been in the shop for 30 years and not even a sign of wear. Don"t loan them out and keep them hid...someone might kill to get them if they find out there is such a well made clamp. Fred OH

Anytime I go to garage sale, I pick up all the clamps I see. I must have over fifty clamps (C, bar and pipe). I needed a bunch of clamps to build a lapstrake canoe a few years back, and I never stopped collecting them.

You're right, the Chinese cast iron junk available at most stores isn't worth bringing home. I'll take a fifty-year-old malleable iron C-clamp any day over that crap.

Rauville pointed to some Armstrong which are likely good heavy ones.

Two good clamps are of more use/value than a hundred poor clamps.
Yup, I was very underwhelmed by the clamps hanging around for sale and won"t buy them unless I intend to throw them away very soon.

How about Real American Made clamps. Wetzler makes many styles of very good clamps in a bewildering range of sizes. The Quick-Action clamps with the copper plated screws for welding. These clamps are versatile , quick to use and heavy enough for many uses. While they are not super heavy, don"t compare them to the junk available in stores.
They don"t paint their clamps, so they can rust if you leave them to the weather. Nice tools though. Wilton makes some real heavy copper plated screw C-clamps. They also make and sell many more lighter duty, but good ones.
I had to tell my supplier many times and point to the pictures in their book too, to convince them that I really did want those HEAVY ones!

This level of tools are not available on the shelf of chain home improvement stores.

I use the autobody clamps made by "Vise-grip" tool company. The tool has u-shaped jaws that will compress the work, and then lock in position! Several adjustments must be made as the tool sends the fluid back to the master cylinder, but once the piston is all the way back, it will be kept in place! I don't know how much they cost now, but i've been using mine for nigh onto 40 years, for all kinds of clamping work!

Don't know about good clamps, but you can't beat a 6-dollar caliper compressor for speed and ease! Local auto parts store should have one cheaper than one of those cheap clamps. They work great!

The good C-clamps are pricy.. I have some good ones to use, & some cheapo ones to loan out. Everytime I loan a C-clamp out, it comes back with the frame sprung. Worse than useless, actually they are dangerous in that condition.

Pretty disappointing, trying to find good tools at those stores isn't it? Armstrong has a good line of C-clamps.
