Howdy all,

I"m in the process of planning and building a new shop/garage and I have a bunch of questions on the different steps.

I had originally thought about posting the questions over here, kind of a "ground-up" ongoing thing (lighting, wiring, HVAC, doors, etc) but I don"t want to bore anyone with my questions. I"ve got 15 years in contractor sales building materials, but I"ve never done anything this extensive before.

Do any of you know of a good layman’s building questions forum like this one? This site has been my "barstool" for tractor stuff "since 99, but I"m getting off topic here by quite a ways.

Ideas?

Scott

Let me fill you in on my opinion. If it is 28X28 then that is plenty big enough for a Workshop. (or plainly a place to get away from the Mrs.) Go with 5/8" drywall ceiling and walls, concrete floor, 10' walls, 9' rollup door, one man door, at least 4 windows tall enough so that they are higher than 5' off the ground. If you cant put up drywall on the ceiling then go with a drop panel ceiling. Go with 100amp service minimum. plenty of cabinets and workbenches. a compressed air enclosure (sound insulated) with lines running over head. put in a drain sloped to the center for washing stuff with drain pipe going outside. Make it heated, and AC too. I know I left out a bunch more stuff.

Thanks for all the help and support, guys!

I'll probably come up with a couple of questions a week, so if you've got some input, a joke, an opinion or whatever, jump in!

I guess if you arn't interested, you can just jump the post (grin).

Not sure if I'm really "allowed" to post links to other sites here, but in the past couple months I've found a couple sites that sound just like what you're looking for. Do a yahoo search for "shop floor talk". That's a forum site mostly inhabited by weldors, and they really have some interesting projects and tons of posts on tools etc. as well as one forum dedicated to thier shops. Tons of great reading there. Next search for "garage junkies". This site's just what the name sounds like- a forum for guys to talk about their garages, what they've done to 'em, what they build in 'em, tools, storage, flooring, lighting, heating, construction, etc.

The garage junkies guys seem to in general have a bit more $$$ to play with, you'll see some REALLY fancy shops, tools, etc., while on the other hand the shop floor talk guys in general are more scroungers who like to build things out of whatever materials they can find.

Great mix of info between the two sights- but don't blame me if you don't get any sleep for the next several nights- there's just SO much good reading on these two sites!

(and no, I'm not affiliated with either of 'em besides being a member)

Ron,

Thanks for the heads-up on the forums! I haven't found the one on Floor Talk yet, but Junkies should keep me busy for a week or so!

I got a lot of information from cooperative extension, including truss designs. I built my own for about half the cost . Barn's still standing.

MJ,
P&Z gave me a bunch of crap about building my own trusses also, so I ordered some from the local truss shop.

I'm going to "modify" mine a little, but the inspector won't be able to tell from the road. (grin).

Hi Scott - if the ID means Idaho, consider putting a heated floor in your shop. Laying in PEX plastic pipe before you pour is easy and not all that expensive. You can use a household hotwater heater, get a small hot water pump, a timer, and you'll never be sorry. Wet floors dry quickly, it's trouble free and totally clean. Also, it heats things, not the air. Nothing is hot or even warm to the touch, but it's not cold either. I've done it on my house and shop, and will do it again with my new shop. Have fun planning!

Jerry,

Yep, North Idaho!

I had seriously considered radiant floor, but I purchased "Room In Attic" trusses for the shop which give me a 12x28 "Beverage" room upstairs. It also gets D@mn hot (110+) here in the summer so I needed ducting for the A/C. Other than the A/C and the upstairs requirements, radiant was my first choice by far.

Thanks!

Scott

You may be OT but there is a definite need for barn talk on this forum. I would venture a guess to say that most of us have at least one barn, garage, shop or shed that we own, want to own, or want to build. I have had a number of occassions when I wanted to ask the folks on here questions about barn building stuff, electrical, running air lines, etc., but hesitated because I thought it was OT. Maybe Kim will consider to open another forum for us. There is most definitely a need.

Bob,

I wasn't sure about posting concerning buildings, but I figured I would give it a shot.

9 times out of 10 I dig thru the archives before I post a question about anything. The questions I'll be asking won't be too specific, and I hope they will help all who might be looking for a quick, honest answer.

Thanks for the support!

Scott

Don't worry about boring anyone with "simple" questions. That's how we all learn. In fact, I have put together a document that's a collection of random thoughts on shed building from this and other sites. If you'd like a copy, shoot me an email. It's nothing fancy, but I think it contains some good ideas.

Hello Matt
Was reading a posting regarding the construction of a pole building. I believe that you mentioned that you had notes regard the same. Could I bother you with a copy of your notes.
I plan to build a equipment shed approx 40X60 ft next sping and though your comments may help prevent mistakes.
Thanks,
Ron B.

There are alot of guys here that have built garages and polebarns. Plan well, make it plenty big enough, dont skimp. ask for opinions.

Red,

I'm still planning out the mechanicals and interiors, thats why I brought it to you guys. Big enough? P&Z kept me down to 28x28, but if I plan carefully I should be able to figure everything in, at least for the first week or so until everything turns into a mess!

As for skimping, I'm too old and fat to do everything twice. When I was younger and broke, I worked with what I had but I'm willing to give up on a couple of tools and projects to get the building right.

Opinions? Thats why I've been here at YT for 5 years!

Good luck with your project! Nothing more enjoyable than planning and building your dream shop from the ground up. I did the same thing starting in 1999, and it is still a work in progress although almost complete now. Biggest problem was zoning, and rather than fight that battle, I built my building a little too small. I just bought another piece of land and a 60' x 100' building and am getting ready to start again. Git-R-Done!

Corn,

I've worked in so many disagreeable conditions that I'm really excited about doing it right. Ever pull a 9N motor holding a flashlight under your chin? Been there, done that!

P&Z put up one heck of a stink, but they don't know about the upstairs so I've got a little more elbow room. 28x28 w/ 10' sidewalls ain't huge, but at least I'll be warm, well lit, and I'm not digging in gravel for a socket!
