A few years ago there was a notice not to burn the papers with yellow coloring. The yellow ink was reported as being toxic and a real health hazard. Might want to leave yellow out of your fires, just in case. They may have changed the formula but why take a chance ?

Rolling them tight within a mixture of water and laundry detergent then letting them dry works too.

The glossy magazines mentioned are called Coated Paper. The paper is actually coated with white kaolin- a clay. One of the most fire resistant materials. That is why coated papers are too expensive to recycle.

Hi Bryan,

My SIL used to heat her house in Denver with rolled up news paper hand tight, rubber band both ends, then soak in a tub of water then sun dry. Looked like they burnt like logs and she said they gave off good heat. I never tried them myself.

I did hit Office Depot when they had a sale on paper shreaders for $10. I bought 4 and use them to shread news paper and magizines and mix the colored paper with good burn paper for starting my wood stove. Best thing since sliced bread.

News paper will burn but glossy magazines will just smother the fire with huge ash flakes.

I put all my glossys in a 5 gallon bucket "on end". Then i dump about a gallon or more of used motor oil on top of them. After a month or so, they burn real nice... :>)

I add to one side of the bucket, and take away from the other side as needed and also add oil as needed as they soak it up.

Robert

Old boy down the road used to shred them, make a pulp out of them, mix with saw dust from his wood shop, and dump the whole mess into a round duct pipe. He'd let them dry (1-2 months) and they would burn for ever.

They usto make a thing that would roll it real tight and then you would dip it in wax. I haven't seen or heard of one in probably 20 years though.
