Bought a log splitter, need help!

Bought at a local auction, a home-made affair that is well built and well used. It has a newer Honda 5.5hp motor that runs like a raped ape, but it does need a little fixin.

The main problem is the connection from the engine to the pump. The shaft coming off the engine has a sprocket on the end of it. The shaft coming off the pump also has a matching sprocket. The two units are mated via a double row chain. Well, the problem is that the engine and pump are not quite perfectly aligned, thus causing chain to pop off.

I wonder, is there a better way to connect the two units? I don"t care for this set up to be perfectly honest.

Thanks in advance fellas!

Brian
If you dont get the engine and pump aligned properly you better buy a box of couplers. It dont matter which coupler you use, miss aligned units will eat them up. If you cant get them aligned better there are u-joint couplers that will work.

even with a Lovejoy type coulping you will bet better life and less vibration if you have good alignment. spend the time to shim and adjust to get it as good as you can.

Hi Brian. I think you answered your own question. The 2 units are not aligned. It is not that hard to get them matched up. The sprockets for your setup can be bought at any bearing servus place pretty cheap. so can the roller chain. Since the chain is off, check the sprockets for any curlling, check the chain for loose links and replace as needed. A lovejoy would be a quick fix but, If you do not get the crankshaft and the hyd. shaft alligned it will not last. Just my opiniun. Went through this on a tree spade awhile ago. The settup you have if fixed properlly will last along time. Just ask any of us Oliver owners.

Do a little research on Lovejoy couplings and see if that would help your situation.

Instead of spending money cant you just acheive better chain alignment by slotting the holes where the two items mount or something?

Brian,

The coupler that you have doesn't have a lot of flexibility as far as alignment is concerned. I'd replace it with a coupler from Northern Tool that they advertise in the hydraulic section of their catalog near the log splitters. Like yours, the engine and pump each have their own half of the coupler, but the connection between them is a rubber 'spider' rather than a chain. They aren't that expensive. Still, you need to work on alignment of the engine and pump. Even with a new coupler, a lot of excessive wear of the coupler will take place because of misaligned components.

Good luck!

Ron

Ron is right: here is a link to Northerns page
Link

Just order the three pieces you need one to fit each shaft.. and the spider.

The pump will be running backwards if you use a love joy(right?) V-Belt would work.

All you need to do is replace the worn parts and align the shafts. I built a 6 inch grain auger about 30 years ago and put a 5 HP electric motor on it and connected it with a coupling made with 2 roller chain sprockets and a double roller chain. That coupling is still running without any problems. The coupling is between the motor and a transmission.
