Long time no post. Anyway, I'm going to be buying a cheap hydraulic press. Size and budget restraints limit me to the common ($130-165) import 12-ton style, but I'm wonder which one is best.

The main types out there are H-frame with the jack under the top bar, H-frame with the jack over the top bar, and A-frame. I'm thinking I might get an A-frame since it seems stronger, but I'm unsure.

Opinions?

12 ton may be OK for a bearing press or for rebuilding water pumps but if you have cultivator shanks or tractor axels to straighten then 20 tons may not be enough. I had a 50 ton at my last employment, Always got the job done but sometimes not much to spare. Ed

Here's another source: Cook's Saw Mfg. Inc. (www.cookssaw.com) 800.473.4804

Just got their catalog and their selling a 20 ton shop press (Reg. $189.95) for $89.76. Heck for that price you could pull off the jack and sell the steel for scrap and still be even. Doubt it has any extra steel and could bend/distort. Only problem is shipping cost. Waiting to call them on Monday to find out how much, cause these things are heavy.

Thanks, sounds like a deal. I"ll give them a call. Is there an item number or something I"d need to ask for?

12 ton isn't much, You probably should look to buy a 20 ro 25 ton press, even that may not do everything you might want to.

I always wanted a press, don't like the cheap ones with the bottle jack. Finally bought a clean used Dake 25 ton from someone on Ebay. Total cost including my expenses to go get it was around $500. I think I snagged a bargain. The same press new is $2750. I bought several different bearing splitters to use with it, and haven't used it much but it is handy to have.

None of the cheap presses have any excess steel. They are likely to bend a little at the full load the jack can produce.

What's the catalog SKU number? Online they're still shown at $199.

Thanks
