Bunny huggers strike again

Man, I'm on a rant big time. All the new plastic gas cans for sale in PA and some other states must now be CARB (California Air Resources Board)compliant. They all must be the unvented type and have the automatic type shutoff spout. I had to saw the spout off to remove the spring mechanism and drill a hole in the top of the can so I can get the gas to flow evenly instead of slurping all over the place. Now I have to plug the air bleed hole with a cork and cap the spout with another plug when I need to fill. Anyone ever try and fuel a top fueled tractor off a ladder holding one of these ingenius devices attached to a full five gallon gas can? Another classic case of the government protecting us from ourselves I'm sure. All the bunny huggers need to get a real job. These new cans are the most unuser friendly thing I've ever seen and I'm taking great personal satisfaction getting around it. Oh not to mention that this new spout design probably also raised the price around $5 or so.

If anyone else has a better solution - I'd appreciate the advice. Sorry for the rant - I don't feel any better anyway.

A little off the gas can subject, but put me to thinking (again) about the gas guzzler tax thats passed on to customers. Geeez, be nice and just add it onto the vehicle price under some other name. But again, be thankful maybe as this I dont think applies to SUV's or trucks.

I agreeeee with you 100 per cent! Those new gas containers are JUNK! My son bought one to use to fill his chain saw what a piece of shi!!!!. Ill tell you where you can get all the " good ole gas cans you want" is at farm auctions or other sales. I've been picking up (5 Gal. or 2 1/2 Gal steel cans mfg. by Eagle) at auctions for one or two bucks each. Keep gas in them for the tractors and there great. Seems that at auctions no one wants to bid on them, Dont know why?

Yes I bought one too . Paid a heck of a price for it to begin with . I couldn't get the end of the spout into my fill tube on my trucks tank . So I had to saw the end off so to get gas to come out , but still couldn't get into my gas tank . Lost part of a gallon on the ground . Great engineering . Hope they didn't pay that nitwit much money for his idea .I know I wasted mine . Ken

That's the Blitz can sold just about everywhere. It truly is a lousy design. Splashes everywhere.

But if you get one from Eagle, it's very different design and works just fine. It'll remind you very much of an old jerry can.

I'm glad I'm retired. I was a general foreman for a can plant and made millions of the older steel gas cans. They were made in sizes from 2 1/2 to 6 1/2 gallon. I still have some, new in boxes. We used to make 12,000 to 15,000 of these cans in a day. I often wondered where they all went. Today, you are hard pressed to find a metal gas can unless you buy the type mentioned above.

Had one similar about 25 years ago. Only needed it for filling lawn mower. Actually once I got used to it, it was rather handy. No funnel, no slobbering spill. Just tip can over & press down on tank neck, was a bit slow, but when tank was full, air bubbles stopped & gas stopped too. Worked on the same principle as water fountains for chickens. could be a bit unhandy on the larger tractor tank necks.

Why use plastic cans? I've always found that the old style 5 gallon metal U.S. "jerry" can with a flexible spout works the best. I know that the new ones are expensive, but I've picked up some at auctions for $5.00 or less.

How do the NASCAR folks get around this? I bet the EPA guys mess their pants when they see those cars leaving the pits with gas spewing out the vent.

While off-topic somewhat, I learned recently that some states require that new gas cans be STERILIZED. Blitz has a steady stream of new gas cans coming from the plant in OK to Kansas City to be sterilized and back to OK. A friend made some decent money hauling those loads of cans. I thought he was nuts when he first told me about it.

Good load to haul, ... no risk of overweight tickets. I bet it was to get cans Flourinated... treated so they are impervious to out-gassing. Many blow-molded containers must be Flourinated before being sold..... ....

EPA has decided that to much gas vapor is lost during the transfer of fuel to small engines. Carb is the lead in all new emissions laws. You will also see new fuel tanks on small engines because they think too much vapor is thru walls of plastic tanks on, lawnmowers, snowmobiles etc. EPA has a never ending mandate. Once they attain one set of goals they have to set new ones and work for attainment so we will see this forever. Of course the people who work for EPA are all trehuggers with no common sense.

I still have a 5 gal. one made of steel. Even has the non-removable spout that doesn't drip. I've horded it for years. Maybe I should put it on E-bay and start it at 50 dollars.

Is that why these gas cans are the way they are? I didn't realize it was a CARB thing. It does make sense in a twisted sort of way.

I bought a new gas can and it's one like you described - stupidest design it make a real mess whenever I use it. I just thought that I happned to buy a bummer gas can because I wasn't paying attention. Now, it seems like they are all going to that design.

I wonder what simple, taken-for-granted item they'll mess with next...

Right on Husky!!! This can be compared to the alternative fuel vehicle issue. The government never invented anything. When demand increases to a certain level, private industry always finds a way. The best thing we can do is get out of the way and make it less burdensome to meet demands. Oh yeah, I like bunnies. I"ll hug a bunny. Of course I"ll eat a bunny too. The bunnies around my place like to play in my nice mowed yard that I mowed with an old inefficient lawnmower, filled with a beat up tin gas can. It never bothered them. I prefer to fill my tank, not douse the surrounding area with explosive fuel. What"s next? A permit to buy WD-40?

For thirty years we had to use a stupid design of steel can that had a spring loaded trigger operated lid with no pour spout at all. If you didnt have a large, LARGE funnel you would be lucky to hit the opening at all. The excuse was it was fire resistant. It had to have been designed by someone who had their tank filled by someone else and never used their own can. It was worse than these new ones, so I guess it is a matter of perspective..... These people dont hug bunnys.. That might traumatize the poor thing...LOL!
