Has anyone had any experience with a Craftsman Mig Welder? Is a Lincoln, Hobart, Miller that much better then other brands. Just looking for a mig welder to work on my tractors with. Won't be using it alot.

Any recommendations?

THanks,

LBH

Dont know what yor budget is but Miller or Licoln are both good machines. I have a Miller 185 that works fine. I think my next one will be a Lincoln 210 as I like the ark better. When looking @ Migs be sure and check the duty cycle rating as that really is the most important thing to look @. I would recomend 40% or higher. The 20% machines are really to light even for tin work. Also when using Flux cor your duty cycle goes down due to the higher heat. Good luck youll really enjoy having one.

LBH: For the difference in money, I'd recommend sticking with one of the 3 main brands--Lincoln, Miller, and Hobart (owned by Miller). This way, you're buying a product made by a company that specializes in welding, not one that rebrands and sells a welder to fill out its tool line. Also, repair parts and consumables will be easier to get, advice and operating tips are much more widespread, and resale value will be higher if you choose to move up later. Speaking of moving up, if you're planning on doing "serious" welding (1/4" thick and up, roughly) get a 220-volt machine right from the get-go; the 110 machines are great for sheet metal and light fab work but are not meant for heavy welding.

When I make large welding equip. purchases I make them at the local welding supply store.... If I have problems or questions I know they'll be able to help Me.... Not sure what kind of response You'd get from the Sears clerk. And unless Your going to use flux cored wire Your going to need a gas cylinder from the local welding supply anyhow.

The sears 110v is a good unit, ist made by a major mfg. I forget who, but I remember doing a lot of reserch when buying my mig. I ended up with a Astro mig. Its OK, got a good deal on it.

I bought a Hobart 175 last year. Great machine. If I had the money I would have gone up in size. The 175 has now been superceeded with the 180 model. Stay with the big 3. People at Sears do not know anything about what they sell. Go to a welding supply house, you will be much better off. I shopped around to several and got a good deal with cart and bottle of gas thrown in.
