Anyone know where to order an economical set of brass vise jaw covers in 4" or 5" range? I thought they'd be simple to find, but the usual suspects like Harbor Freight and Northern no longer carry them. I'd rather not pay Wilton's price if there are lesser one's to be had. Thanks.

I cut the size I want out of old highway signs from the salvage yard, clamp in the vise and form with a hammer....not brass but work well for soft jaws. I've also got a set made from 1/4" plywood (cut to fit over the vise screw cover for location and support) with a strip of skirting leather glued to the upper 2" for delicate work.

Find some copper pipe, say 1-1/2", and cut two pieces a wee longer than the width of your vise jaws. Slice the pieces lengthwise and open them up. Form the split pieces on a chunk of angle iron with a hammer so they become angle-shaped themselves. Slip them over the vise jaws.

Eastwoods has a polyurethane set with magnetic grips. Not sure that helps any.

Try W.W. Grainger Industrial Supply, If you don't find what you are looking for online, call their nearest outlet store and the people there would be able to obtain it for you. The drawback is that Grainger is usually more expensive than others, but they have a lead for most everything tool related and can get whatever the item is. I've used their 800 number a couple of times, kinda iffy. Close to talking to a girl still in high school for all the info and knowledge imparted. But I guess one can't expect much from a call center, oh well....

Wilton ones are only ones I could find. Bought a set at Travers Tool Co. for around 40 dollars a while back. The following Saturday, I found 2 identical sets at a flea market for a dollar a set. At least I have spares now....

An auto supply store in our town carries them.

The type they carry are aluminum, and have magnets imbedded in them to keep them on the vice jaws.

If you'd like, I can stop by there tomorrow and get the manufacturer's name and the prices.

I would appreciate that. I may get luck and find a similar store or place that carries them where I live. Thanks.

Grainger carries no brass, and all others are $30 and up.
Harbor Freight rubber lined aluminum are about $6/pair. Fillings and cuttings are attracted to the weak magnets. I've seen bronze/copper, held on by two fingers that wrapped over the ends of the jaws from the top. The fingers were about 2 1/2" or longer by 3/4" wide by 1/8" thick. They followed the outside curve of the jaw.

The brand the local parts store carries is Posilock. Take a look at the link below.

They are not cheap! The one at the local store is a full 6" wide, discounted price about $25.00.

Didn't know they sell them. I have made jaws for my vice, using brass, lead, wood and rubber. Easy to make.

Never tried to purchase any so cant help you on that, but where I worked many years ago, we made them out of copper tubing and they worked OK, just takes a little time.
