Hey Guys, My B&S lawn tractor model 287707 type 022501 is having problems. The lower engine gasket blew due to loose bolts so i fixed that...but when i put everything back together and start it...the throttle has NO control and the engine races out of control. I dont think i touched anything on the carb and what not. And im not sure what to do. Is it the timing, or maybe the govenor. It seems like the throttle linkage and such is intact, but the slighest movement in the throttle arm make the engine hit high RPM. Any suggestions would be fantastic. Thanks

Sunds like the arm and the governor gear inside aren't touching properly. Or, the spring isn't connected at the governor arm.

Go to Briggs website, you can find some info there. Best thing to get is a service manual for your series engine. It'll have everything you need to know in it, including how to assemble, and adjust the governor.

You didn't say if you enginewas horizontal or vertical, but my guess is that the governor gear inside the crankcase fell of the pin or something else happened to it.

The Engine is Vertical, shaft runing top to bottom. What is the correct way to put the governor gear back in. It could have fell off the pin or something else like you suggested

I'm more familiar with horizontal but I think they are the same as far as the governor goes.If you stand the engineup so the crank is horizontal, the plastic gear goes on the pin on the side cover. The gear should be against the cover with a shim washer between it and the cover. There is a flapper that goes through the block and has the arm that controls the governor on the outside.Inside the engine, the flapper needs to touch the little rounded end of the governor gear. When you put the cover back on the gear needs to mesh with the camshaft gear.

Your governor linkage is either bound up or disconnected.
