I have heard of using flywheels from car engines for the wheels of a bandsaw. You would need to make the frame, blade holding guides, top wheel tracking and tension adjustments, and some drive system, either gear box of some sort or double jackshaft reduction. For the work involved you could probably buy one of the import wood saws and reduce the speed. Making one would be a good project though and if you did a good job it would bring you a lot of satsfaction and you would have a way better saw then the imports.

Check your local auctions for a few months. I see a fair number going cheap.

You can order the bandwheels (from Jet) used on the Jet bandsaws. There in the $100 range each( Diameter = 19"). I think the wheels will take up to a 1.5" width blade.

I built one some years ago. I got the "V" pulleys
from an old IHC forage harvestor. Right price,
free from a neighbor. They are about 19 and 22 inches in diameter, so had to offset the centers
to get the business side of the blade verticle.
Glued the "V" belt into the groove. Used a 4 speed
truck tranny with "granny" gear for drive and use
1st and 4th. Gives me about 125 and 800 fpm. Works
fine for both wood and metal.

You have a great idea in using a tranny for the saw. I've tried to figure out the ratio to convert a wood bandsaw to cut steel, but it runs into too many big and small pulleys and jack shafts. What HP electric motor are you using to run the transmission and saw? It seems like it would take 3 or 4 at least. I have an old garden tractor tranny that might handle the power. It would take less power and less room than one from a full size truck.

I only have a 1 HP motor on it. Works fine. The motor drives a worm gear which is coupled to the
tranny. Then there is a roller chain drive to
the shaft with the big blade pulley on it. I run
motor oil in the tranny which reduces drag some.

You should be able to get a one, in good shape from all the companies going down the drain in the USA.
