I want to build a 12 or 20 ton press using a bottle jack. Looking at "store bought" it looks like some C channel with holes. Does anyone have some plans or experience making one ?

We build a bench model 12 ton press using 3 inch channel. The hardest thing to find is the springs. we get them out of Chicago. If you need plans let us know.

Most of them I've seen have just used old car hood springs.

Most all but the most expensive industrial units lack a way to move the lower beam except by hand... which means removing the work to get the weight off. I have adapted a small winch from an old camper jack along with a couple of pulleys and some 1/8 cable.

How's this one look? There are a bunch of pictures at http://www.metalworking.com/dropbox/ under Hydraulic Press. Saw this link on the Hobart welding board. Might ask over there.

Nice looking unit. Those springs wrapped up and over like that would make me nervous, though. I was swinging on a screen door on the old farm one day when I was 4 or 5 and the spring (at eye-level to me) broke. Only a quick trip to the eye doctor saved my left eye. I can still hear the gravel bouncing off the bottom of Grandpas' Ford as we raced to town and the doc!

I salvaged most of one out of a junk pile. Yer right, it's C channel with some holes, a couple of good stiff cross-pieces, and some guides to keep the press plate aligned, and some return springs.

I useta have a sketch of a build yer own with some instructions around here some place. If I can find 'em, you're welcome to 'em.
