Building a fence line sprayer?

I run a two strand electric fence around about 10 acres, and it works real good except for vegetation growing up to the fence in the summer. Currently, to keep the grass under the fence down, I walk around the fence with a hand held sprayer and make lots of trips back and forth to refill.

What I'd like to do is use a 55 gallon drum of a three point setup to run an electric pump with a tractor and not have all the trips. Other than the pump, hose to a boom or spray wand, the nozzles, maybe a strainer- to keep junk out of the nozzles. What else do I need? Do I need to run a pressure gauge? Should I also use tip or nozzle strainers? How about ball valves to shut it off or just kill the switch? I want to put something together that works fairly well but I don't have much experience with spraying fields and such. I figured for all the more I'll use it it's not worth several hundreds for a commercial unit. Any ideas and hints would be appreciated.

As John says, use one of the ATV type sprayers. I've had one for 15 years (but got my first atv last year). I put a 20' hose on mine and have used it from the cab of the pickup, and used bungee cords to put it on the tractor fender. Usually 6 tanks will do all the fence and cross fence on 250 acres.

If you just want to spray under the fence, the cheapest route may be to by an ATV sprayer and use it either on an ATV or on the tractor. That way you have everything you need in one package. Mine cost $125 and I use to to spray under pasture fence and old fencerows to control brush. If you build your own, use both an inline strainer and a strainer in the nozzle tip. It beats taking the tip off and cleaning it in the middle of the pasture. Also use a plastic barrel instead of a metal drum. Cleans easier and doesn't get rust particles into the system.
