I have an older Lincoln welder with a 16 horsepower B&S engine. The engine has a idle switch which works fine.It runs the engine at hi speed when welding and at idle when not welding. The trouble i'm having is with the adjustments on the carb. When i get it set to run smooth at high speed it does great. But when it idle's down it runs very rough and sometimes dies and has to be restarted.I can set it to idle smoothly and then it runs erratic at hi speed.I've tried tweaking the screws but have had no luck.Do i have carb problems or what am i missing.P/S i also have new gas in the tank.

I would suspect you have crud in your idle circuit. A disassembly and thorough cleaning of the carb may be in order.

A contributing factor could be the solenoid idle setting may be set too low for the engine to function at while running the generator, and then recover well from when thrown under load.

Check air filter isn't too dirty, plugged up

check carb connections to block are tight, not leaking air, bypassing carb

Are there seperate screws for idle and high speed mixtures? If so Need to adjust both, I think the high speed feed the low speed circuit, so I'de try adjusting high speed mix first, then idle.

could it be the float level? need to rebuild carb to get to that.

if you can't fix the mixture try turning idle speed up a little like said, should be a small screw on the throttle of carb to do this with.

When you get it set to run at high speed, reset the idle speed adjustment screw (not the mixture, but the linkage) until you get an idle that doesn't stall.
