Hey Guys,
Just wanted to let you know of a problem I'm having with a Chop Saw. I bought a Ryobi 14" metal cutting chop saw at a Cummins Tool Sale truck and made about 6 or so cuts with it and it fried. Took it up to the truck today as they were in town again and exchanged it. Tried this one out and it fried after less than 2 cuts.
Just a word of warning on this saw. It was a reconditioned saw and maybe that should have been a clue???? I will buy a brand new Dewalt in a couple of days when they come on sale at a local farm supply and I bet I'll get better service out of that one!!!!
Yall, don't think I'm trying to bad mouth the people at Cummins at all, they have been real nice about it so far, lets just see how they handle it from here though. I'll repost about it when I find out more.

I bought the Ryobi 4" reco grinder at the cummins tool sale for I think 20 bucks. A peice of junk to say the least. The grinder gets so hot after a minute you cannot even hold it. Not even worth the hassel to try and return.

Like many companies years ago Ryobi produced a quality product Now nothing against Home Depot but they own Ryobi exclusivly now within the last 2 or 3 years, as I have been watching their adds Ryobi keeps getting cheaper and cheaper to buy so that is a flag right there. Now I personally own a DW 871 dewalt chopsaw and have never had a problem with it I love it and would not own anything else I also own Dewalt cordless drill, sawsall, jigsaw, circular saw and grinder I htink they are good tools liek anything else they need to be taken care of I recommended to my boss that he buy a DW 871 for us at work and he did and the knuckleheads I work with burned it up trying to work it too hard practically standing on it to get it to cut faster I am not saying this is your problem with the Ryobi I am happy with my DW 871 I do light-medium fabricating on the side if you are going to be using this tool in an indutrial setting it wouldn't hurt to buy the Milwaukee I have a Milwaukee 9 inch grinder and a bandsaw and when you pull the trigger you can tell they are a little more substantial to their construction. I hope this helps

There is a short article in Fine Homebuilding magazine this month about counterfeit tools and how to identify them.

I would go with the Milwaukee or the Porter Cable unit before the rest. I have a Milwaukee and have had excellant service out of it. I bought a DeWalt at a Sears store three years ago and had the same experience as you had with the Ryobi, three cuts, freid it, took it back to the store and they wanted to give me another one, no way, made them give me a refund, bought a Milwaukee. No trouble since.

Have not used a metal chop saw by Dewalt, but have the wood saw and the sliding model and they are some of the best tools I have ever purchased.

Gary, I bet the Dewalt on sale is a DW870. I would spring for the DW871. I have three of them and they are great. The first one I bought I abused to the max in a bind to get a pipe corral built. It lasted over 5 years till the bearings went out. I took it to Dewalt service center in Garland and they fixed it and it is better than ever. I seriously do not think you will find a better saw unless you go with a high dollar industrial model. They sell at Tractor Supply for 200 or you can look on ebay, I got one there for 130 a year or so ago. It is much more saw than the DW870, more hp and heavier built. But, the worst Dewalt will be better than the best rjobi. Ive never had luck with robi. Good luck.

I wouldn't throw a ryobi product at hogs butt to get him to move. Folks I work for are cheap and purchased an 18V Ryobi drill. Even in low gear I can hold the chuck with my hand and stall the motor. If it were an 18V Milwaukee it would hurt you. I rank Ryobi right up there with Black and Decker. You get what you pay for. I would consider Dewalt as an entry level machine for the average person. If you really plan to use it alot, buy Milwaukee.

Yes they are, but the tools with the black and decker lable are meant for the home owner who will use it maybe once in 3-4 years. The Dewalt is targeted towards the person who is a little more serious, but in my opinion still not professional grade.

I suppose tools are just like trucks, you get a good one and then you get a bad one in the same brand. I have a Ryobi 13" planer and it will plane twice as many boards than my neighbors 12" Dewalt. His just seems to bog down all the time. And the Ryobi was about $100 cheaper.

Cole you may have hit the nail on the head when you said 9 or 10 years ago. They were probably made better back then. We are living in a throw away society and I for one think things need to go back to the old standard of making things that last and also bringing jobs back to US plants instead of sending all the work overseas. While we are at it lets send everyone back to town thats coming out and ruining our countryside and our farm land by chopping it up in little pieces. One of these days we may not even be able to plant a garden for the concrete.

I bought a Ryobi orbital buffer / polisher at Home Depot and within the first 5 minutes of use on the motor threw out sparks and quit. I brought it back and got another one and it lasted about 10 minutes before doing the same thing. I noticed that they were made in China.

Hey Texas Gary, I have a Dewalt sawzall, palm sander and chopsaw. I use them all daily and I'm very pleased with their value and performance. I think that they stack up against pricy compeditors. On the other hand, I'm dissapointed in the new Makita tools I've used lately. By the way, thanks for hosting the Patriots!
Happy shopping, Jared

Hey guys,
Just a footnote on my original post. Took the replacement chop saw to the truck and the people gave me back my check for the purchase this morning which is right at what the saw costs originally(this was my idea on the calling it even). Got my money(check) back, took the second saw back and now I'm good to go on getting a brand new one this week, what do yall think about Dewalt brand saws???? ONe on sale this week starting Tuesday for 189.00.
I do appreciate the folks at the tool truck making things right, two thumbs up here.

I bought a Ryobi 14 inch metal cutting chop saw from Home Depot. It was new (not refurbished). I used it about 3 times over a years period. The next time I went to use it, the motor burned out. I took it back to Home Depot and they told me my one year warranty had expired by 15 days! I bought a used porter cable from my neighbor the following week, and have been using it for 5 years with no problems. It still cuts good. Maybe Ryobi has a problem. I would never buy another Ryobi product.

Hi Gary,

Anymore I buy everything on Visa. Atleast then I can return it and get my money back. If the company hassels me on the return then all I do is file a dispute with Visa.

I haven't lost any money since.

"CUMMINS" tools are not really a name brand at all. Just one of those touchy-feely, fuzzy names tacked on imported junk to make you feel good when you buy it.

I do realise the fact that these are not top of the line tools but the chop saw is a Ryobi.

With buying things from Cummin tools besure to keep your sales slip/receipt. Had to have replacements or adjustments made, In the past no problems in getting an refund, If they no longer have an item they will send you an refund also. remember you get what you pay for, with that said I buy there cheap 4in. grinders for about $10.00 ea & keep different wire wheels in them saves a lot of time changing them if I get 6mo. to a year out of them or intill cummins tools come back around my area I got my $10.00 worth out of it. as far as the ryobi chopsaw I have one use the crap out of if. I didn't say abuse, I've gone threw one set of field windings in the motor, Try to avoid using any extension cords all motors don't like voltage drop. for my next chop saw I've been eyeing the big Dewalt one with the D handle, I have a few Milwalkee Drills which have been very good but the motors on there chop saws look alot like the one on my Ryobi.
