I am trying to get a friends F.M. "Z" 2H.P. running. How can I determine if the spark is "hot" enough ? It is a dull red and looks a little feeble , but rather than just pay to have it rebuilt , I'd like to know how to check it. Thanks

Hi Ralph,
If your spark is yellow/red it is not good.
Because your spark must be blue/purple.
You probably must buy a stronger capacitor.
Its not a matter of the points.
You must also check the windings of the magneto.
I also own a Fairbanks Z yet a 1,5 HP.
Have not start my restoration yet.

Ralph: Yes check with Ted Brookover. He can heal the mag by just the laying on of hands. You can clean the points with alcohol. And test the spark again. Sometimes you get a little oil or corrosion on the contact point, and they will not make a good connection.

I don't know if you fixed your dipstick problem or not? If not, this is how I did it for my Fairbanks Morse Z Style D 2 HP.
The oil dipstick is made from a ½" pipe plug. This plug has a ¼" dia hole drilled through it. The original looks like it has a large ¼" dia cotter pin inserted into the pipe plug. The fix I have in mind is to make an ¼" dia eye bolt (without thread), insert into the pipe plug hole, and then braze it to the pipe plug. I intend to file a fill mark on the part that goes into the crankcase. I am going to determine the position of this mark after I put a quart of oil in the crankcase.
I do have pictures.
