All,

Thanks for the tip on going to Ebay to find a manual for my Wisconsin engine. I found one of the original manuals with an exploded parts section!

I have a weak Wisconsin VH4D engine. Compression check shows 100, 40, 100, 100. I am looking at a rebuild or replacement. I just called a guy who may have a used 4 cylinder Wisconsin for sale. He doesn't know what type but says he will check. I hope to hear from him soon. He wants $1000 for his engine. I've heard that a rebuild will cost me about $600-$800 in parts. I'm pretty handy with tools but have never rebuilt an engine before.

What kind of experiences have any of you had with removing, rebuilding and replacing a Wisconsin VH4D engine, especially if you has to pull it out of a Ford 340 Skid Steer Loader? Thanks.

Question...Is a VH4D interchangeable with a VE4?

Thanks for the help,
Chuck

If the lower end of your motor is still good, you can just pull the one bank of cylinders fairly easily. That would let you re-grind valves, replace rings, re-bore, etc. Personally, I would do the same on both sides unless everything looks very good except a cracked ring or burnt valve. Even re-boring all 4 cylinders shouldn't cost you $600. Since you count on this thing for making a living, you may want to go ahead & do a full rebuild while the machine is down. Or find a cheap dead one & rebuild it, then swap it out.

My $.02 worth.

Hello Dave, I'm glad you were able to find the older manual on Ebay. I'm sure that you would be able to rebuild the engine. One thing I found in my process is to plan on replacing all the exhaust valves and guides.I thought only one was bad, but during the valve grinding process, all but one turned out to need replacing. The engines are really easy to work on. Everything is pretty basic. Also the factory is real good on aiding if you run into problems. Hope this helps and encourages you to go ahead. Joe
