Compression question

I have built a homemade hit 'n miss engine that I designed myself and am wondering what the compression should be. I seem to have it too high as when I start it sometimes it will very hard to turn the crank over past the compression in order to start it. And still it will somtimes shoot the crank backwards from direction of normal operation after it pops a few times but then cannot get past the compression. I can easily add a spacer under the head inorder to reduce to compression but I am wondering about the general ratio of what a motor with a say a 3-5 HP rating is. Any ideas will be helpfull....

Thinking about older engines that started on gas and could then change over to kerosene, I would guess compression ratio would be in the 5 or 6 to 1 range. Old A Models and N series tractors were 6 or 6.5 to 1.
