F/M 3hp fuel line

I have a 3 hp F/M (1923) hit and miss that has the fuel line from the carb down into the tank. The fuel line has a special end (carb side) and then a check ball at the bottom (inside tank). The old tank is beyond repair but has two openings at the front. One was of course to add gas and the other was to accept the gas line. As the gas line is 'one piece', what kind of an adaptor or fitting was used to allow the gas line to pass thru yet keep the crud out of the tank?
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Tom/Idaho
