I have a 3 HP Fairbanks Morse "Z" with American Bosch mag and spoked flywheel, built in 1922, which I am restoring. According to Wendel's book, all FM engines were green, however mine is red and it looks like it is the original paint job, which is in poor shape. Can anyone help?

I don't know if this is the case with your engine, but I have seen similar situations with International engines. I worked on a Liliston Hay-Baler once that had an IHC LB engine on it. The entire setup was yellow, and apparently original. I can only guess that Liliston bought the engines from IH to use on their balers. Could be something similar happened to your red FM.

Most Fairbanks Morse engines 'z' types were painted green, but the 'competition model',a basic 2hp 'z' type with battery + coil ignition were the only 'z' type engines to be painted red.Hope this helps!
