Look for a Hercules(Jaeger,Economy)1 3/4hp or a McCormick-Deering 1 1/2 hp Type M engine. These engines are the most numerous and parts are easy to obtain. I know, I restored two as my first time engines.

The 1 1/2 hp McCormick is a good engine to start with especially if you are planning to get one that is rusted up. You will almost surely break something getting it apart because of inexperience (I know I did). My first engine was a 3 hp McCormick. It isn't a hit and miss engine though. It is throttle goverened.
