The 8N I just bought (1948) was converted to a negative-ground 12 volt system a few years ago by the previous owner. He put in a separate button (actually a horn button) instead of using the original tranny-mounted button with the safety interlock. Is there any problem with switching it back to the 'safe' starter?

First thing you should do is to determine if your existing start button is feeding +12v or if is it feeding Ground to your solenoid small terminal when pushed for start. PO may have installed a solenoid the is not compatible with the safety start switch. You need to know what you have before re-wire. It will save you headaches later.

There shouldn't ba a problem switching back but I've found that a lot of the time the original push button switch was bad when a different one was installed. There's a good chance you'll need to replace the original to get it to work. Easy to test since it's just a ground that completes the circuit.
Good Luck, Lee

Gabe..... ...uh...check yer starter mounted solenoid. It should be 3-terminal with little middle terminal facing the engine block.

Sometimes, un-experienced shadetree mechanics change the original 3-terminal 6-volt solenoid for a 12-volt 4-terminal solenoid. NOT NECESSARY to do that. The OEM 6-volt starter works just fine on 12-volts..... ....Dell, a 12-volt advocate that knows 8-ways to convert and they all work
