12V question/data plate question

I am converting an 8N to 12V. I understand why you need a resistor for a 6V coil but I am using a 12V. Why is a resistor used for the 12V (internal or external) coil?
Also as I bead blasted the battery box I found the data plate covered with several layers of red paint.I rubbed some off with carb cleaner but I don't want to ruin it. Can I restore it? It is removed so I could soak it in something.

Steve;

Sorry, I can't answer your ??? about the 12v thing, But... as for cleaning the paint and deposits off the pat. plate, here is something for you to

consider using:

third party image

Just put the plate in this stuff, and it should do the trick for ya. Keep checking it as it soaks, cause this stuff is pretty potent, and you do not want to ruin the plate. Should just wrinkle up the paint, so you can get the paint off with a rag.

Caution: Try not to get this stuff on your skin. It'll burn ya!!!third party image

Your local auto parts store should have this.

As Bruces link shows, if it is a side mount tractor, you can simply get a 12v coil.. like a NAPA IC14SB.. and use no resistors. If it is a front ount square coil.. I have yet to see a TRUE 12v one.. I have seen many that are marked 12v.. but all of them so far have needed -some- external series resistance with them. how much depends on each coil manufacturer, and it's primary winding resistance value. The easy way to test it is to shoot for 3-4A max of primary current thru the coil, with the key on, and points closed. Any mor ethan that and the coil life and points life will start to suffer. Too much lower.. and spark potential can be degraded.

Front or side distributor? The long answer is at the link below.

If you can get the paint off of the data plate w/o ruining it, you're a better man than me! You can get a replacement. $10 I think.
