Hi - I am hard at work on my first 8N. I am starting a 12 volt conversion for it. I have seen lots of info on the conversion so I know what"s to be done. I have two questions for you experts. 1. What is a good source for the wider alternator pulley? 2. How come when you switch to negative ground the starter dosen"t spin in the wrong direction since it is a DC motor?

The starter is not reversed because the field coil magnatism is reversed when you reverse polarity as well as the armature. What was a north pole now becomes a south. If the starter had permanite magnet field magnets then it would reverse rotation when armatutre polarity is reversed. It's kinda like reversing 2 things and that makes them stay in the same prospective with each other. That is the short way to explain it - hope it makes sense to you.

I'll let Dell or one of the other gurus that can fully explain the details answer the second question. For the first question, you may be able to use the pulley off of your 6V genny. At least that's what I did. If yours won't work or doesn't fit, try your local auto parts store (NAPA or the like) or the local ag supply store (Tractor Supply or the like), they should be able to help.
