Does anyone know the battery group number for an 8N 12 volt battery? The Interstate guys were not much help going by dimension alone.

I usually go for the cheapest group number..... It don't take much of a battery for these and usually the conversion will have been done with long enough cables so post location isn't an issue.

As provided elsewhere on this site:

"When selecting a 12 volt battery, the physical size and electrical capacity of the battery should be considered. A typical Group 1 six volt battery measures 8-7/8” long x 6-7/8” wide x 8” tall, so most battery trays have ample room for a 12 volt battery. The popular Group 26 (8-1/4 x 6-3/4 x 7-1/2) battery will easily fit most applications as it is somewhat smaller than the Group 1 dimensions. A Group 25, will provide an even better fit since its dimensions are almost identical to the Group 1 six volt. Also available is the Group 35, which is identical to the Group 25 except the posts are reversed."

So if you are going 12v negative ground a Group 35 might work best.

I just use the "Garden Tractor" size battery, usually only $20-$25

It's NOT critical... There's PLENTY of room in there for a wide variety of 12-Volt batteries.

About anything in the 450 and up CCA range, with the appropriate connections to match your battery cables (top post or side post) will work GREAT.

A "rule of thumb" is MINIMUM CCA = 2 x CID, and with this little (120 CID) low-compression engine about ANY auto battery is going to be of more than adequate CCA.

I think it is a group #26. Possibly with the R for reverse terminals? Going from ol tymers memory. Some one will chime in with yep or nope. Wayne
