Go with a 3 wire.

#2 terminal to charge stud.

#1 terminal thru a marker lamp or diode ( line on diode toward alternator ), then wire tot he switched side of ignition switch.

Wire from charge stud to the same place your genny/vreg bat wire went to.. IE.. if this was a front mount, then the lower 3rd terminal onthe resistor block..e tc..

Well if a 3 wire set up is wired correctly then the reason for an over charge would be a bad regulator in the alternator and it need to be check/replaced. If its a new alternator you got your self a new bad one which happens a lot now days. When ever I get one now days I have it checked before I even walk out of the store with it. Last time I got one they had to try 3 of them before they got one good one

John..... ...despite the apparent desirability and simplicity of the 1-wire 12-volt conversion, the modified internal voltage regulator needs about 1800rpms to start charging. Don't know about you, but I don't like "jazzin" a cold engine to almost max rpms (2200rpms), do you???

The slightly more complicated 3-wire 12-volt conversion will start charging at almost idle rpms (600rpms) Your call..... ....Dell, a 12-volt advocate for the right reasons
