12v conversion - skip resister and get 12v coil?

I had posted a few weeks back about my 6v system losing juice, not recharging. Since a new/rebuilt generator was almost as much as a 12v conversion kit, I bit the bullet. However, the 51 8n wont start now, and I think its because the juice on the coil side of the resistor looks real weak. Should I just bypass the resistor and get a 12v coil? Does it matter which 12v coil I get (I didnt see any for 8ns at the store) - and also, will a 12v coil burn out my points/condenser quicker?
