Back in 02 I went thru my entire electrical system replacing every thing and converted to 12 volts at the same time.

Question, a few days ago the coil quit on me. I grabbed the one that I took off when I replaced everything back in 02 and that fixed it up..... ...untill yesterday when that coil went bad.

I"m trying to remember, is there a differense betwene a 12 volt and a 6 volt coil or are they the same thing? Did I just repace a 12 volt one with a 6 volt one and burn it up that way??

I know I have a voltage reducer? mounted behind the dash but dont remember which one it is, seems like Dell and others on here led me to what I purchased. Just trying to refresh my memory before I buy a new coil..... ..and maybe the wrong one.

The coil I replaced back in 02 was NAPA # IC670...Thanks

Mike,

What resistors do you have in-line? If you still have the original ballast resistor on the back of the dash and another resistor in line to the coil, you will need a 6 volt coil. If you only have the original ballast resistor or some other single resistor in line to the coil, you need a 12 volt coil. You can't tell the difference in the coils by just looking. there were a number of post within the last couple of months about the resistances between 6 and 12 volts coils. You can seach for them.

Bottom line is on a front mount coil, you will need some sort of resistor(s) in line to the coil.

Good luck,
Danny

Yep, you will need to get a real 12v coil and replace that burnt 6v one. If you get a real 12v coil, you won't need a ballast resistor, but in most cases it won't hurt to run one, just a bit less spark, but the coil will run cooler. I don't run a resistor on my 12v system, but I run solid state ignition.

Yes there is a difference inthe 6 and 12v coils.. and you need the correct resistor combo for each depending on system voltage.

Forgot too mention, 46' 2n front mount distributor.
