I got a 12 Volt conversion kit for Ford 8n and has a square resistor in it. Does this take the place of the original one that is on the tractor?

There is so much info out there on this subject that I hesitate to post, but to simplify all the volumes of material that has been written, I will say that regardless of all else (resistance numbers for ballasts , coils, etc.), just make sure of one thing & that is that the current thru the points is about 3 amps (absolute max 4 amps). You adjust this by selecting the proper resistors/ballast, depending on whatever coil you have. Open the points (stick a piece of paper between them), connect ammeter across them, turn on the ignition, read amperes. Adjust resistors as required. Be happy.

If it is like my Tisco, it should have included instructions that tell you that the square resistor goes in series with the original. Even has a wiring diagrams for 9N/2N and one for 8N. If it had no instruction I think you should contact your supplier and tell them they owe you one. Other wise it is all guess work.
