12v conversion question

Did a 12 v conversion, using the 194 lamp method. all seems ok, but the light isnt going out now, it just gets dimmer after starting....charges at about 30 after starting, drops to 20, then 15..half that with lights on. Is this normal? Could have sworn light was going totally out earlier!!!!

Tested ok on our testing machine (O'Reilly Auto Parts)....put it back in, and will do voltage tests a soon as I can get to it. Those Amp readings are right after start-up, haven't really run it under work conditions yet....just quick start up tests etc...maybe i'll charge the battery fully with a charger, THEN see what the ALt puts out after starting up.....can't say if the battery has been fully charged up yet....it was a "used" one.

That should NOT be happening. The alternators were designed by GM to function with a 194 lamp, and it SHOULD go out, COMPLETELY, as soon as the alternator "excites".

Check the voltage at the battery, at the large output stud on the alternator, the "switched side" of the ignition switch and the #1 and #2 terminals on the alternator, and post back with those figures. (CAREFULLY measure the voltages while it's running.)

You either have voltage drop in the electrical system, causing a voltage differential between the "switched side" of the ignition switch and the alternator, OR a internal alternator problems (bad diode in the diode trio or rectifier bridge).

The voltage measurements I requested will tell the story of what's wrong.

I've had the same thing happen before on a few I did. I checked them and they where putting out what they should have so I left them like that. My self I use the diode instead of the light bulb because I hate the idiot lights and know that type of thing happens at times

If the solid-state voltage regulator is doing its job correctly, you shouldn't see much more than a slight flicker on your dashboard ammeter when you turn on the lights.

Moreover, (and assuming the battery is in good shape) the charge rate should drop to near zero after a couple of minutes or so under normal working conditions.

Take the alternator to Pep Zone or wherever and have it tested.

I should have added, if the alternator tests ok on the stand, double check all your wiring connections, especially grounds. The internal voltage regulator in most alternators won't work well unless properly grounded, with the correct polarity.
