if you install a 12 v coil,NAPA CS35 points,NAPA FA200 condenser,12 volt alternator and a 12v battery in a 9n ..... ...should you still need the resister inline?

Another question .....if you have fire thru the coil and to the points with the points fireing, with nothing to the plugs ...why? New rotor, cap condenser, points, plug wires etc, useing the same old square coil. Everything checked and rechecked but obviously over looking something.

With a 12 volt square can coil you still need about 1/2 ohm resistance -- use two 1 ohm 10 watt resistors in parallel. You need it 'cause the 12 volt coil is really a 12 volt coil but your alternator puts out about 14.5 volts when running.

With a new square can coil you need to stretch out the springy thing on the bottom of it to make contact with the terminal in the distributor. I had to put shims under the screw in the distributor to have it make contact. When you have the distributor on your bench and the points closed and coil installed check for continuity twixt the terminal on top of the coil and ground.

Swampy..... ..what Roger sez..... .and remember, iff'n points don't OPEN electrically, you gitt NO SPARKIES. Very common for neubies to SHORT-OUT the ignition points to condenser connection. Points gap (0.015) is best set on the kitchen table..... ..Dell, yer self-appointed sparkie-meister
