OK...I Might convert to 12v but.....I have some questions.

#1 is headlights..I see the "originals" are a 5 3/4 bulb. Can you replace the 6 volts with the say sylvania 5 3/4 replacement headlamps you can get at say autozone?? Has anyone else done this.

I guess my real question/ reason for maybe converting to 12v is I would love to use a flasher relay and a set of amber lamps to make a set of flashers for when I am traveling along the road to the neighbors or plowing. Our road has some swells and what not and I'd love to be able to ad some safety flashers to it for this reason.....If I can do that via the 6 volt system...than I'm all for that. But have had no luck finding the supplies in 6 volt. Any thoughts or comments are appreciated.

I had a '56 bug I "restored" as a teen and I remember...it was hard to find 6 volt then but you could find it....!! now its even more impossible.

also not looking to spend a fortune doing it....

Unless you are puttin' on your party dress and goin' to a show, any light will do. If your workin' your 'little jewel' who cares what the lights LOOK like, heck wrap up the 'originals' in some pink silk and save 'em for the parade. Lots of inexpensive light units out there....try J.C. Whitney.

Todd, if you would like to know. I had several of those lamps and after two or three bulb changes, the reflector lense would not stay on. I went to lamps with screws, more better for me.

I just bought a pack of two 6-volt dual-filament park turn signal bulbs from Wal-Mart the other day. These are exactly the same as the 12-volt push and twist bulbs and fit the same sockets. Six volts is no problem.

If you wire two six volt bulbs in series then they will operate on 12 volts.

Todd..... ..yeah, there are 6v & 12v sealed beam single filament headlite replacement bulbs available that fit the common tractor headlite shell. They are eather 4-1/2 dia or 5-1/2 dia; NOT 5-3/4 dia which are 12v dual-beam automotive.

As for "flashers", check out battery operated LED BICYCLE safety flashers. (no wiring required) Simple, eh?..... ..Dell

A properly maintained 6v system and average or better condition engine will start fine.

A worn out engine may need fast 12v starter. An improperly maintained 6v system will give you a headache.

it's always batter to start with a well maintained electrical system, THEN decide if you need 12v for electrical load or bandaid reasons.

To jump right to 12v before putting the 6v electrical system in order is uh.. wastefull imho..

TSC sells the headlamp bulbs in either 6v ( 30 or 35w ) or 12v ( 55w ) They fit the 'standard' tracto-o-lamp type shells just fine.

A vw flasher unit is EASY to find.. both napa and carquest sell them. heck.. probably get them at auto zone too...

I have done the exact thing you are thinking about.. that is.. adding 6v flashers to a tractor...

This is what I found/looking at..cheap and will mount to fender brackets easily with no ill modifications.

what are other 6 volters using if they have this set up??

I only have a work light now on back..no Tail light as I some have.

Yes..correct...i have been able to find the 6volt flasher relay..... but..what about light assemblies?

What did YOU use for a 6 volt light/lamp assembly for the flasher??

other than the flywheel ring gear..which I plan to replace..and some troubles right now..she always fires up fine...so I cant see spending and changing everything just for a light?? ya know...

Its the lamp assembly with a threaded post that I cant seem to find in 6volt...bulbs yes...assemblies no..

Would it surprise you to find out that that 'assembly' comes apart to change the bulb when it blows?

Which means.. you buy the assembly.. and you buy the 6v bulb. then you take the assembly apart, and swap the bulbs.. and put the 12v bulb in your tool box for use in some other application.

I'm not sure what you are saying. The assemble is neither 6v nor 12v. Only the bulb. Buy a 6v bulb that fits the assembly and it should work fine.
