I'm about to order some things from YTMAG and noticed they have a wiring harness for a 12 volt conversion (about $23 more than the other). do the wires actually "know" 6 volt from 12 volt? do i need this, or will the standard 6 volt harness work with my 12 volt conversion (23 extra bucks is a lot for me).
Tex

I use the elcheapo harnnes on all the conversions I do, I kin tell ya how to modifi the harness fer a side mount dist. I would have to look at the front mt one to figger it out.

12V side mt

looked at a new harness so Heres a quickie, tie red & yellow at the regulator side of the harness together. White wire izz the excite wire and goes to the excite wire at the alternator, tie in to the ignition switch or 2 post junction block on back of switch. At the gen wire were they connect to the gen, use the bigger red wire as the Bat wire on the alt and the white wire as the excite wire. all the rest of the wires will lay in place as intended. Bat wire at solenoid has the clear plastic (may have a black insulator wrap) on it were it hooks to the plus side of the amp gauge other yellow goes to neg side of amp gauge you will have one wire left over a black wire I think I like to use it fer headlites.. You will need to git a connector for the alternator and add a in line dio to the whit ezsite wire. I think the advertized 12V harness izz fer a one wire alt set up and I would recomend to use the 3 wire set up so if you git the 12V harness you will need to add a excite wire, Bob has the info fer the conection at the alt do a serch fer Bob.

I better add this or some one else will hammer me for it. Wires do care about how many amps go through them so you do need the correct size wire for things. Like on an alternator you need to use 10 gauge wire from the big post to the battery/amp gauge

His wires should be carrying about half the current they were on 6v.. so he should be good to go. Voltage ont he insulation will be fine for all the comercially available standard stuff.

I knew that just wanted to put in the guage/amp part since it can make a differance in a lot of cases. Seen to many alternator wired with a #14 gauge wire going to the big post of the alternator and they wonder why it smokes on them

Especially since an alt can kick out 30-45-60 amps!

Yep and if the battery is low or weak and then they run it that way they can end up with a fire and a tractor and fire don't mix very well. Of course fire and most things don't mix well.

For the most part a wire is a wire and doesn't care if its 6 volts, 12 volts or 110 volts. Wires come in sizes 14 gauge, 12 gauge etc. Now as far as the harrnass will all it will do if you buy it is make it easier to wire up since it has the correct wires for hooking it up, to the right places. My self I make/do all the wireing my self from scrath and I've never had any problems but I was also an E.T. when I was in the navy so I know a little about doing it
