12v - New Wire - Solenoid only clicks

I recently re-wired a 51 8N that had previously been converted to 12v. Also added new starter button, new altmeter, solenoid, ignition switch and battery. When trying to start, the solenoid only "clicks" and the starter does nothing. Is this a poor grounding problem, too small of gauge of wire or ???? This wiring includes a diode in the wire going from the No.1 pigtail wire on the alternator to the terminal behind the dash that is also connected to the + terminal (with resistor) on the coil. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like bad connections some place of a bad soliniod or starter. Or it could also be a jammed starter drive in the ring gear which would also cause that problem.

Clark..... ..welp, when ya don't understand sumptin' it is immediately suspect for any problem. That DIODE is necessary so you can TURN-OFF yer engine. Otherwize the internal guttz of the alternator will continue to POWER yer ignition coil even AFTER you turn yer ignition switch OFF. Bottom line, that diode has 'NUTTIN' to do with yer solenoid clickin' but is very important for yer 12-volt conversion. Understand?

Original 6-volt battery cables (1/0, thick as yer thumb) have MORE'NUFF ampacity to run yer 6-volt starter on 12-volts. And yer 6-volt 3-terminal starter solenoid had more'nuff guttz to run on 12-volts. And it is proving that by "clicking". Many neubies miss-mount the 3-terminal starter solenoid because it is eazier to mount it so the middle terminal incorrectly faces outside but it will NEVER CLICK when miss-wired.

Now then, iff'n ya gotta 4-wire NON-standard starter solenoid, all bets are OFF.

Howsomevers; just because yer new solenoid is clicking doesn't mean it is bulletproof. It could be BAD right from the factory.

You can test it 2-different ways. With a voltmeter or testlite, you should read battery volts (or lite-up) when connected between BOTH BIG solenoid studs. And when you "CLICK" yer solenoid, the meter reading should go to "ZERO" (testlite OFF). That means yer solenoid INTERNAL contacts are being "clicked together" and the solenoid is GOOD. Iff'n yer meter continues to read 12-volts (or lite stays lit) when you click yer solenoid, that means yer solenoid INTERNAL contacts are NOT being "clicked together" and the solenoid is BAD! Understand?

...OR... you can testmeter from each solenoid BIG STUD to ground. On BATT side, you should obviously read battery volts and on STARTER side, you should read ZERO volts. This is normal. Your solenoid wiring is good. Now "click" yer solenoid. You should read battery volts on BOTH sides of yer solenoid with respect to ground (testlite is lit on BOTH studs) Yer starter solenoid is good and starter motor should TURN. Understand? Iff'n you don't read battery volts on BOTH STUDS when you "clickie" yer solenoid, yer starter solenoid is BAD. or yer battery CABLES are BAD. Understand?..... respectfully, Dell

Thanks Dell, I was hoping you would answer. I will check through all of your replies. Some I have already performed but will do again with your better direction. I am familiar with the 12 volt conversion needs that you mentioned (diode, have a 3-term. solenoid, resistor, etc.). I am suspecting a poor ground through the starter so I will be sure to do the checking you have described. Too late tonight though, so says the wife, so it will wait till tomorrow night. Thanks again, hclark

With a 12-Volt system the starter will usually find a good enough path to ground through the mounting bolts and where the case hits the casting without having to make everything shiny. This is one of the main reasons people switch to 12-volts. MAYBE with a fresh paint job on both the starter and the casting you could insulate it well enough not to turn, but that is hard to believe. I might have to test that one myself one afternoon.

Are you sure the battery has a good charge on it?

Yes, I have a brand new battery completely charged. I ran through Dell"s checking of the Solenoid and everything checks out fine there. I saw a suggustion in the archives to ground the battery right to the engine block so I will see if that works tonight. If not, I will probably finish putting the tractor back together and pull it to see if it will start that way. Other than that, I am out of ideas. Thanks for your input.
