I'm not that good with wireing so if anyone can help me that would be nice. I would like to change the two 9n tractors i have to a 12 volt system. I have a 3rd 9n that is a 12 volt system but there must be a short somewere becouse the battery is always dead. and i have put a new battery in the tractor. So i would like to do the next two right and then redo the 3rd tractor right. If someone has a drawing that an idot can read that would be for me. Thanks

If you do the conversions, keep the 6-volt parts in a box for the next owner. You can buy a 12-volt kit right on this site. Look under parts in the left column. My 6-volt 52-8N is still working fine.

I just have to ask..... why are you converting them to 12v? I have three N's, all 6v & all three start the first time, every time. As Dell sez, there are a few legitimate reasons to convert to 12v (including 'because I want to') but a lot more excuses that do not solve the underlying problem. For example, do an archives search & see how many posts involve problems w/ 12v conversions. I also suggest you fix the problem w/ the 12v first. Lots of folks here will be glad to help.

Kitty..... ..you've got 1-conversion that ain't right and now you want to do 2-more conversions? I DON'T THINK SO!!!

Don't you see the dichotomy here?

Practice on gittin' yer BAD conversion right, then you'll be smart enuff to do yer other 2-conversions without making miss-stakes.

I know 8-ways to do 12-volt conversions and they all work. And I don't have a clue which way your current debacle is miss-wired, iff'n enny.

Me? First thing I'd do is take the current 12-volt alternator into an autoparts store for "free" checkout. Why? because it is free, the solid state electronic guttz can have bad components that discharge a battery even iff'n wired correctly.

Once you do the above, get back to us and we'll try and help you out. I don't have a "favorite" 12-volt conversion schematic drawing but I know how to do it right, the first time..... ...Dell, a 12-volt advocate for the right reasons

This may help with the one already converted, and a warning about the ones you are about to convert:

When I obtained my 9N it had been converted to 12 volts. But, the alternator didn't keep the battery charged - in fact, it never showed any charge on the ammeter.

One of the many times I was jump-starting the battery, I paid attention enough to observe that the polarity of the battery was wrong - it was positive ground.

Here's the deal - the old, 6 volt system with generator was positive ground. ALL alternators are built for negative ground. So, one of the things you must do when converting to 12 volts is re-align your thinking about how the battery goes.

I know, you have to change the battery too. But it's the mind-set that tells you positive ground that has to be changed.

I have changed my battery, and am planning to pick up a rebuilt alternator in the next couple of days.

By the way, the ignition and lights and any other devices on the tractor don't care about polarity. It only affects the generator/alternator.

Why does the change from positive ground to negative ground not effect the starter? It should not matter with lights or ignition but why does this not result in the starter running backwards???

Nothing about this in the instructions - just a clear note for a negative ground.

I'm changing to the 12 volt system because my generator is no longer keeping the battery (new) charged and I cant get the 2N restarted if its hot and I stall it. I got the entire conversion kit for less than a rebuilt generator! Bob

Yeabut,

6 volt light bulbs do not last long (a few micro-seconds)when connected to 12 volts.

Just to clarify... 'most' alternators are stup for netagive ground.

'some alternators are setup for positive ground, or full isolated case.
