I have a 6 Volt Pertronix ignition but want to convert to a 12 charging system.

Question: Can this be done and how?

Thanks in advance.

Sure it can be done, but it's gonna mean buying both a 12 volt conversion kit, a 12 volt battery, and a new Pertronix kit. What's the problem you're hoping to solve by doing it? There may be cheaper ways of fixin' it.

Rick,
Thanks for the reply.

No problems as of yet. I am refurbishing an old 9N from the ground up and was originally going to keep it 6 volt (and still might). After reading some posts on this and other boards I figured that 12 volts has a lot of advantages, accessories wise, that I like.

I thought that maybe just reversing the positive ground coil and making it negative ground and inserting a 6 to 12 resistor in the ignition line to the coil I could keep my EI and everything else would be 12 volt.

Haven't done much mechanicin' in the last 30 years and thought I'd post to those with more knowledge on this subject. Not interested in destroying anything doing R&D.

Leave the 12 volt bit alone. It will give you much trouble.

If your tractor is running well then there is no reason to convert it to 12 volts. If you really watch the posts here, you will realize that 12 volt conversions seem to cause more headaches than they solve. I would just use your 6V Pertonix with the stock system. 6 volts is enough for these little tractors, even in sub-zero weather. I don't know what kind of accessories you want to put on it but why make more headaches for yourself?

Unless your 12 volt conversion is positive ground (rare) your 6 volt positive ground EI will not work even with a 12 to 6 volt converting resistor .

If you have a six volt negative ground EI then maybe you could use a converting resistor.

You would have to use an external round can coil to change its polarity -- it would be hard to change the polarity of the original square can front mount coil.

Roger,
Thanks for the reply.

Did I forget to mention that the EI came with a 6 volt round automotive type coil?

I will hook up the mechanical boot this evening and kick my posterior several times!

OOPS, that should be 12 to 6 volt resistor.
