You can hook it up to the switched side of the ignition switch. You need some way to prevent backfeeding current from your alternator to the ignition circuit so as you can turn off yur tractor. Most folks use a marker lamp or a diode.
Diode is much cheaper but takes more know how to wire in. Marker lamp is easier but a couple bucks more expensive. -- They both work. Other things that folks have used is: Oil pressure switch, push button, aux contact on keyed ignition switch.
I use a diode (had one sitting around so the price was right [as in free] )

The diode is not really that hard to figure out. If you wire it basackwards the engine will continue to run when you turn the key off like you said. If that happens, just flip the two-wire connector out of the alternator to shut it off. Then just swap the ends of the diode to the opposite leads and it should work. That said, I prefer to use an ignition switch with a separate accessory position for the field wire and I also run it through an idiot light so I have an indication that the key is ON.

There's no "figuring out" involved at all. Simply connect the white-banded "cathode" end of the diode to the alternator's # 1 terminal!

Sorry but if wired backwards the engine will still be able to be turned off by the ignition switch because the alternator never starts chargeing because it wass never excited.

Yep, you would think. Guess mine was shorted right out of the box. Didn't work either way. Tried another diode, and it worked ok. But I was not completly happy with it until I replaced the switch and wired the alternator the way it was designed to work.

[Quote]the alternator the way it was designed to work.{/quote]

If there is one fact about Automaker's it is the lack of sustaining Engineering (correcting faults) PLL just expect to replace parts

When the design & implementation of an Electrical/Electronic System is "correct" you will have ~(near) ZERO failures.

How many Auto Alternators fail everyday? How many Batteries Over-Charge? Would a diode in the excite line correct these faults? How many Auto’s "now" use a diode? (GM does) I would say that the excite voltage, provided by the Alt, does “not” want to see battery voltage when the alternator is charging. How you obtain that result is your choice
