I use radoi shack part #276-1661. They come in a pack of 4 and cost about $3. I keep a pack of them around all the time, but I also put a lot of alternators on tractors.

I have one more question do i just cut the wire and shove the diode ends into the wires, and then heat shrink around it, or do i have to solder the wires together?

I use crimp on splices to to that job. Quick easy and don"t cost much. You can just sort of twist the wires togeather but I perfer a more pro type look.

Yep I do it all the time, I use the red colored ones when I do it. The red ones are made for the smaller type wire. If I have to use a bigger one because of the alternator wireing being to big I just make a fold in the diode wire and then slip it in to a yellow one, which is made for the bigger #10 wire

I don't know the radio shack #, but a good choice is a 1N5008. It's WAY overkill in ratings, so you'll never have trouble with it. Should be easy to find, or perhaps RS can cross referance it for you.
