Hello All, Picked up a half 8n and half 9n. It was pieced together. I put on a new 1 wire generator which is the same as the bad one I took off, I have a new 6V battery in it. It has a cutout relat that looks relatively new. Also I put on a new amp meter. The problem I am having is the cutout relay does not drop out when the tractor is turned off. The is a resistor on the back of the dash that is not hooked up, but no where in the It manual does it show using a resistor in this set up. DOES ANY BODY KNOW WHY THE CUTOUT DOESN"T DROP OUT WHEN THE TRACTOR IS OFF??? The charge system shows charging and if the points are open it will pull them in whenthe throttle is sped up but will not reopen unless done manally.
ANY help would be greatly appreciated!!!!
Thanks

Increase the spring tension slightly until it opens when the engine stops.New parts are good if you can afford them.Try to fix the old one first.

Afford to repair the old parts.....thats a bit arrogant and presumtuous.....The battery is 1 year old and out of my Allis Chalmers B, the generator is traded from my 80 something year old Grandad that bought a box of new starters and generators 15 years ago from a hardware store that was going out of buisness for 2 bucks apiece. The ammeter was bought at TSC for 13 bucks. The was no battery in the tractor when I got it. The ammeter and wiring was missing. The generator has an open field in the armature, therefore making it uneconomical to get rewound. Therefore I swapped Grandad a couple boxes of cigars for the generator. The cutour relay is the same one that was there. So I have about 20 bucks in replacing the missing and damaged componants. I work 60 hours a week, have 3 kids at home and come home and work another 6 hours on my farm. I can decided what is econonical to repair and as for the lots of money.....get real!!

blacksheep..... ....resistor is for the 1-terminal OEM 6-volt squarecan ignition coil mounted ontop of the 4-nipple frontmount distributor. Resistor has NOTHING to do with the 2-terminal roundcan cutt-off relay yer complainin 'bout.

Its been a while since I looked at the 2-terminal roundcan cutt-off relay, but yer complaint of NOT DISCONNECTING when engine is turned off is consistant with UPSIDE-DOWN mounting of the 2-bolt 2-terminal roundcan cutt-outt relay.

Otherwize, iff'n yer certain yer cutt-outt is right-sideup; then sticky/worn relay armature pivot-points would cause also cause yer complaint of NOT releasing. In which cases, replace yer roundcan cutt-outt relay.

And remember to "polarize" yer 2-terminal roundcan cutt-outt relay by "arc-sparking" the electrical terminals with engine OFF. I use handles from pair of pliers to "arc-spark" the cutt-outt relay. Remember, you can "polarize" as many times as you think it needs it..... ...Dell

Dell I repolarized the generator and cut out relay. I checked the position and it is right side up. Rechecked the wiring. Cleaned the points and demagnetized them. Everthing is correct. I opened the contacts up and the cutout will still not drop out after the tractor is off. The contacts open when I disconnect the battery.
Are there any symptoms when a cutout goes bad othe than points stuck open or closed.....It is almost like I am getting a feedback from the battery, but I don't understand how. Thanks,Steve

Blacksheep,
The contacts open when I disconnect the battery.
The cutout does not "open" until you disconnect the battery but does it stay "open" when you reconnect the battery. If yes you have it wired correctly.

It has been reported many times that the NEW Cutout's have this problem of the battery holding the relay. The solution is to increase spring tension (BEND TAB) such that battery voltage will not make or hold the relay. You can check it by Jumpering that bat to Arm side (like polarizing) and the Cutout should not "make" or hold.

Hope this helps,

Phil, That is correct the points open when the battery is disconnected and remain open when the battery is reconnected. I have the steering sector torn down now and won't be able to further this until it goes back together next week. I did increase the point gap considerably before...problably as far as 3/4 inch, but I felt that it was way too much gap and figured something was wrong. I can't remember if the contacts worked correctly after making this change. Thanks for the reply...I will get back with you and let you know the outcome.
Thanks, Steve
